Just started Gears of War. Heard a lot of good things but honestly it appears it has nothing new to offer. Does it get better after the first 2 chapters? Hammer of Dawn? Hammer of Yawn more like. Was hoping this would be as good as RE4.

I enjoyed the GoW campaign a lot, but it may have something to do w/ the fact that I did the whole thing in co-op mode. I imagine it's a lot more fun with a friend.

A recipe for disappointment imo.

I don't really remember the chapter progress or whatever, but my best memories of the game were when playing long Co-op sessions on Hardcore, Insane solo has some memories too, but they're all pissed off ones.

goofy is right, the campaign is a lot more fun with a buddy, although I still enjoyed it playing by myself.

If you want to do the campaign mode together online I'd be down to help out.

Online multiplayer is where it's at though with this game, but just be prepared to get r8ped for some time while you get the hang of it. It's not a game you can just pick up and expect to do well. If you want some tips we can setup a private session and go over some things.
Once you start getting good at multiplayer and start crushing the game is just filthy.

So I just got a Wii and am gonna get into the VC stuff soon, I'm sure this has been discussed in the VC updates thread but it's too big to navigate.. do I really need the classic controller or should I be fine with the WiiMote + Gamecube controller? All these little add-ons are adding up so I'd rather not spend money on the classic.

The GC controller is fine, but for some games it's kind of awkward to play but doesn't affect anything after a little adjustment.

i abstained from buying the classic controller until i grabbed the snes castlevania game. i found it unplayable on a wavebird, but most other stuff was cool.

my wavebird also seems to get random rf interference that causes its signal to temporarily but frustratingly drop, so classic avoids that too.

Interesting. I don't have a wavebird just a regular GC controller but the only game I had trouble with was Super Mario World and that was because the run and jump buttons got reversed.

Did you actually play through every single level on SMB3 or use warps?

Yay, finished everything on SMW except the "Special" levels (Gnarly, Tubular, etc.)

Also got Yoshi's Island. It definitely looks silly at first. But you can't really go wrong with a Mario platformer (except SMB 1), so I'm definitely going to play it through. After that, I'll probably work my way through the 3D portion of the Mario platformer series (64, Sunshine, and Galaxy). I'm starting to get an unhealthy obsession with Mario games.

I've cleared SMW with 96 goals in one sitting before, and I still play it every so often.

Same with SMW2, and I've 100%ed all levels and beaten the game using my feet (standard controller) with a ~80% average score per level. Of course this was when I was like 15 and had no life.

LOL, nice job. This reminds me when I used to play Street Fighter 2 with a blind fold to make it more fair when I played against my friends.

Those crazy japanese have too much time on their hands. this guy spend six months making an automatic play SMW hacked level that played along with some random music. needless to say it's awesome:

nice to see that they feature part of the best VG soundtrack ever at ~6:05

So is anyone else really really excited about seeing this being released in a few months?

September 16, FTW. I think its awesome that its gonna be completely updated(I think its gonna be much like the PSX version that didn't get stateside). I also think its awesome that the entire Zenthian saga is being sent to the DS, as in DQ IV, DQ V, and DQ VI.

I'm excited about DQ 4 because I only have 1-3 for the regular NES! Never got around to getting 4 since it was pretty damn rare and expensive.

when they put out 4-6 I'll be set and own them all, so totally stoked about this myself!!!

I unfortunately do own DWIV for the NES, but never really started it, and now none of my 3 NESii work so I can't even check if the battery still works to sell it. Now I'm torn between playing the original version with the glorious NES graphics and the new version, or some combination.

Similar with V and VI...it's cool that we're getting the games sort of, but isn't part of the charm the Super Famicom graphics?

Mariokart SNES is tilting me. What is the most efficient way to turn? Powersliding gives me trouble bc it overshoots or slides out wide after coming out of the powerslide :/ ... keep holding down the gas but use the brake? Just let off the acceleration?

(I'm good at n64 and GC version but am still sucking at this)

It really depends on what character you want to use. Toad or Koopa are the best grip and just one small tap with the power slide button is often sufficient to get round corners, add in a bit of slide here and there on the tighter ones. If you're using the other characters then you need to learn to time your powerslides to a greater or lesser extent. Kong and Bowser require this technique extensively but enable you to get the fastest lap times once you have mastered it.
