It's not like people are sitting at home the night of a current-gen release to download it and then emulate it instead of buying it.

There might be some flaw in my thinking, and if there is I'd love to hear it, but I can't see any way emulation is actually hurting the companies, besides just taking away from POTENTIAL profits that they could have by re-releasing them or VC or whatever.
This is wrong. Emulators def kill the video game business. I can DL the DLC for video games and attach it to an external HD. I can DL full games and burn them to play in a modded 360. They had LA Noire up pretty quick on one such torrent site.

The majority of emulator/roms etc does come from older games though. But there's also the GBA games that are easy to emulate and I believe they have some DS games (no touch screen type games obv).

Like I said, I don't include emulation in my definition of piracy. Obviously pirating current gen games is and always will be harmful, but that's not what I was talking about. Emulating older games for which the companies are no longer seeing revenue for anyway isn't doing anything.

As far as I know, GBA has long since been abandoned and nobody except people reselling games are going to see any money from physical games. I didn't know what the state of DS emulation was, but if it's good enough to make the games playable, then that might be the only area where emulation is actually putting any kind of dent into revenue.

And just to be clear one more time, I am strictly talking about EMULATION, not piracy in general. Playing a burnt game on a modded 360 is obviously not a form of emulation.

Yeah, emulation means, from webster:

Quote:
hardware or software that permits programs written for one computer to be run on another computer
Running a 360 game on a 360 isn't exactly emulation.

I'm not sure you can even buy some games at all resale shops anymore. I know of one in my hometown that would literally sell games for every system since the NES, but even their offerings for anything older than the gamecube were extremely limited and typically in a disheveled bin.

Yeah, it's been probably 5 years since I've seen Gamestop carrying games for anything prior to the last gen of systems. Granted, I rarely go there, and I usually just grab what I need and leave when I do go there, but still. That's probably the only physical store that I know of in my area that buys/sells used games at all, so to play any older games now you pretty much either have to go with emulation, or check craigslist/ebay/whatever.

I don't think I quite understood how much GS invades the anus until I traded in my 360 copy of BO a few weeks ago.

The guy offered me $22. Two feet away, used copies of BO were selling for $54. I took the cash, because I no longer had a 360 and I knew I wouldn't ever follow through on selling it elsewhere. A little bit of my manhood died that day.

They design their stores so that customers believe they're helping out an independent small business. I got suckered into this. But when the guy looked me in the face and said, "Hey, man, corporate gives us the prices. I've got nothing to do with it," I knew that was the last time I'd ever spend a penny at GameStop.

FWIW: A lot of cities/towns have independent used video game store that will give you a much better trade in for your games. Sometimes they will give you less as a cash sale but they also sell used games for less then GS.

go to Games->Game Data Utility, then delete the Killzone 3 entry in there. you'll have to redownload the latest patch but the DLC will be gone. if there is an easier way i couldnt find it and would like to hear it as well.

Sorry I used the term emulation a little loosely on my prior post. I also more so meant that when the GBA was actually around and actually new/making games I had emulators for it. Sorry for the lack of clarification. But I get what you guys are saying though and I agree.

Also GS is the biggest ****ing con artists ever. I went in there and they had Mass Effect 1/2 both priced at 20 bucks used. I tell the guy that they're new for 20 for both games and I ask why it's so much. He says the same thing trey said. I asked if he can bump it down. He replied with "Yeah, I guess we can do 18".....Seriously wtf.

On another note we have this local game store that's self owned and they're even worse. They sell games for way over what everyone else is selling it for. EX Splinter Cell Conviction is 20 new in a normal store and like 45~ there. Just sucks cause I don't want to drive an hour to buy used games.

They say the advent of internet browsing on cell phones has made it so companies have to be a lot more competitive. I think stores that do this, and I have seen some resale shops that have the same terrible prices, won't last terribly long. Seems a number of them make or stay in business by modding current consoles. Wonder where that falls in the boundaries of legality.

I feel your pain, recently looked up trade-in prices for NFS hot pursuit and FIFA 11 on amazon and the combined total was over $50 . brought the games to game stop and they offered me $32.. Told them to lick every inch of my fat my ass, I could wait a week till amazon received my used games.

I don't understand why any of you would ever have to go into GS. There are these little sites called Amazon.com, ebay.com, and half.com which have new and used games for significantly cheaper than any regular store (barring the occasional huge promotion). With the latter two sites, you can even - get this - sell your used games for the same price you would be able to buy them for, minus some commission and shipping.

Half.com is very easy to sell games on, they lead you by the hand through the whole process.

Kind of like poker players.

While where at it why didn't any GS reps ever suggest inFamous to me when I asked them for a fun game where you just **** **** up.

imo: It was great publicity for them to let PS3 offer the 1st one free I will be picking up the second ASAP. I still owe $30 on the trade-in offer from L.A. Noire. (which I actually don't wanna go pick up) I wonder if they would be willing to transfer it to a different game.

Amazon.com and ebay.com are actually pretty big sites. I guess you could call half.com "little" by comparison but not really.

LOL at "pretty big"...

Those two sites probably have a bigger yearly profit than the GDP of small countries.

This is true. There are also many people whose time is worth far more than the $20 they would have saved by jumping through another set of hoops.

Further, there are people who understand money isn't the only way to measure value. They don't define their self worth by how few times they get ripped off before they die.

Then there are morons who refuse to acknowledge complexities such as this.

correct but those bitching about prices of used video games in B&M stores are not those people

and as to the bolded, i'm not really sure what you're saying there (unless you're agreeing with him in that internet shopping is far superior to B&M wrt to used games)...going on the internet (where most of spend hours a day anyway) and buying a game is not really jumping through another set of hoops, it much easier and more efficient than going out to a store and purchasing it so if your time is really worth that much than you would be better off buying online...and if you're just cheap and looking to save a couple bucks you're also better off shopping online so its like the best of both worlds
