Turok 2 campaign mode gives me PTSD just thinking about it. Multiplayer was solid though.

I don't think I ever beat Turok 1 either due to the limited ammo/unlimited respawns but at least you had a chance.

No, and haven't heard of the latter.

Related peeve I think I've mentioned before but I guess not in this thread: games that make you do **** and then turn around and say "butnahhh, we decided to go in a different direction but thanks for trying", primarily in the form of:
- difficult boss fights where you get their health bar down 90% only for a cutscene to play where they get away and live anyway
- sequences where you do a bunch of work to save a character and that character dies anyway

I hate when games are huge just for sake of being huge. Dragon Age Inquisition is great example of this. Huge areas without meaningful content. There is one large desert map where you literally just run for 5 minutes to reach next quest location, rinse, repeat.

Games where your character has like a dozen different attacks or weapons or moves but one of them is vastly superior to all others and you mindlessly use it 99% of the game.

Modern hand-holding is atrocious.

Morrowind did it so well. You had character dialogue and vague journal entries as your only guide. I remember stumbling upon the Morag Tong assassin guild completely by accident. That line of discovery and despair was so perfect.

But now, every game is bigass glowing arrows and constant pop-up reminders to get you to the next objective or make sure it's impossible to miss an important item/step.

Yep, it's like modern game developers seem absolutely terrified of the notion that a player may not know exactly where to go and what to do next to progress in the game even if it's for 5 freaking minutes.

So many people really just want interactive movies where 95% of the game is cutscenes or scripted button prompts, and the other 5% is walking between them.

A few years ago Miyamoto nailed it about these type of games and gamers very well

Quote:
"[These are] the sort of people who, for example, might want to watch a movie. They might want to go to Disneyland," he begins, "Their attitude is, 'okay, I am the customer. You are supposed to entertain me.' It's kind of a passive attitude they're taking, and to me it's kind of a pathetic thing." He continues that, "They do not know how interesting it is if you move one step further and try to challenge yourself [with more advanced games]."

Assassin's Creed was the worst for this. The first move they give you was the counter and then you unlock moves that are inferior and harder to use with no benefit.

Games that have endless pointless dialog confirmations then like 1.5 sentences in the quest log about what to do.

Random ass tiny ledges on platforms that so no purpose and just get in the god damn way.

You try to jump on the ledge but often you're too close and directly under the ledge so you just hit your head. So you gotta back up to jump but then often you are too far away, it's infuriating. Get rid of these stupid ass little ledges.

I made a diagram if you don't understand

Can't even remember a specific one recently, it's just something I've run into in numerous games over the years.

It happens in a bunch of NES games but I thought you had seen it in a recent game and was curious.

It's even worse in 3D games than 2D games because you often can't see the ledge.

Enemy grenades that kill you through 3 feet of cover.

Player grenades that don't even do a single point of damage as long as the enemy is behind a cardboard box.

Footsoldiers that can't be killed by 1 shot with the most powerful sniper in the game without modding the **** out of it bc you're on the hardest difficulty.

A new one that occurred to me today when I saw a post saying "Ellie and Joel finally getting back to work on The Last Of Us Part 2". Finally? Just now?

The way that games are announced years and years ahead of time.

With a movie, you'll occasionally get a year and change, but usually you get months. Music at this point can be weeks or even days. But games... Years minimum it seems. Some, even a decade plus. I'd rather not know until its close at this point.

Enemies that can hurt you with their death animations.

Like robotic enemies that explode after they are dead for example.

You could argue it adds to the challenge I guess but it's far more annoying than challenging. It really slows down the flow of the game as you sorta have to stop and wait after every single thing you kill and wait for its death animation to fully end. Even if most enemies don't do it, if any enemies in the game do you sorta adopt this philosophy just to be safe.

I hate games where you have to follow a character to a location and they walk like 1/10th the speed you do w/o even sprinting. (Looking at you Bethesda!)

Also hate when you have a follower and they are programmed to follow you so closely that if you are exploring a dungeon w/ tight corridors they crawl right up your ass and block you from making a U turn after looting at the end of a hallway.

This.
I have lost count of the times I have shot Dogmeat in the face for blocking me in doorways or corridors, that **** gets annoying.
