I can't believe how immersive this is. With Skyrim/GTAV/Farcry 4 I remember the world opening up and thinking wow that's pretty cool/big. Haven't really had that feeling with this specifically because it's so immersive. I'm just freely wondering the world doing random stuff.

Like I'm legit overwhelmed with deciding what to do and I'm not sure I've ever truly had that feeling with an open world game til now.

Do agree with heater wrt to the controls - hopefully it's something that can be patched somewhat because it's my only real complaint. Think of my secondary quests might be bugged (the one where you search for shields with Dune - pretty sure have found the shield but can't seem to interact with it).

How do we want to handle spoilers in here? All main story stuff and maybe very specific info on completing side quests? Seems like if we spoil everything thread will become awkward to read.

Also maybe I'm just getting sappy in my old age but I thought this was pretty cool. http://kotaku.com/the-witcher-3-has-...ide-1705540303

I thought Elder Scrolls Oblivion was a terrible game because many of the combat components were broken or just simply awful (the stealth being the biggest culprit) and found the open world pointless as most of it was just barren and preferred to just fast travel from one mission to the next. I never played Skyrim, but liked Fallout 3 quite a bit but didn't find it amazing or anything. Gave up on Mass Effect 1 pretty quickly due to the combat being awful and some lol things like the vehicle portions then found ME2 and 3 to be amazing (like top 10 last gen games for me) due to the combat being fixed. From what I've seen of Witcher 3, the conversation system seems similar to ME? I've read reviews that said the combat is great and others that mentioned it was flawed/clunky. What do you guys think of it and roughly what percentage of the game is combat? Basically, based on what I wrote, how likely am I to enjoy this game?

Pretty sure you'll enjoy it because it rocks, I'm still wandering around doing random quests before I take on the Griffin

I haven't read about this in any reviews, but user comments on them seem to complain a lot about how empty the world is quest-wise, with only a handful of non main story mission quests that aren't generic template quests picked up from billboards. That was what made the first two games so appealing to me, where there were rarely any quests that were simply kill 10 turdlings and collect your reward. If there were, there was always some local backstory to what was going on and a particular reason to pacify the area, and lots of things to be learned by investigating the areas around, reading background material and talking to people, and having actual changes to the world when you were finished. Sounds like this one is more of a traditional MMO in that regard, except that most of these generic quests only give a tiny fraction of the xp of larger quests. Still, all of those complaints still mention how great the smaller portion of intentional sidequests and main story quests are.

Timmay:

There's a few different shields in that area. Use your Witcher sense.

Sorry for lack of spoiler tags.

Obviously use spoiler tags for anything story/quest-related.

My PS4 copy has hard crashed twice when playing the card game Gwent, at the moment I pass my turn. This happen to anyone else?

Also I had this weird thing where my horse wouldn't cross bridges, but that fixed itself when I reloaded the game.

I read about the gwent thing happening on PS4 to a few people on NeoGAF.

I had a weird crash where it was telling me to reconnect my controller but it was connected. When I went to the Xbox home screen the controller worked fine. Had to do the 10 second hold off switch power down to fix it.

It crashed on me once on PC. It just completely vanished in an instant. I've been saving pretty often since.

Haven't had any crashes on PS4 yet. Still saving pretty routinely as I am dying quite a bit.

Yeah I searched for a way to increase that on the Xbox to no avail

I believe they are going to try and fix the small text issue via patch

Yea, I'm reading the same. PC got a patch today but no text increase but nice to see they're putting out fixes quick.

I don't know where you read that, but those people just flat out don't know what they're talking about, imo. This hasn't been my experience at all. All of the stuff that you talk about being good in the previous games is still there in spades. I spent about 2.5 hours on a multiple-stage side quest with a very interesting back story that culminated in me banging a pretty cute blonde, for example. I don't think I've been asked to kill or collect ten of anything yet.

My coworker decided to get the Collector's Edition today so he's selling me his PS4 copy for $20.

Never played Skyrim, Mass Effect or Fallout. Closest thing is probably WoW: WoD, which I enjoyed for a while but the "Kill 10 whatevers!" got pretty annoying and repetitive. Got my character from 90 to about 97 then kinda stopped playing.

Hopefully I enjoy this more.

Enjoying it so far. Story is interesting. The Side quests are fun. Exploring is fun. That card game looks fun though I haven't done it too much. Good looking game too. Overall it is worth a purchase.

That all said I do think it's overrated. It's definitely not a 10 imo. The combat system is just okay. The controls and camera could be tighter. The sheer volume of loot you pick up for me is overwhelming (though this is probably a strength for many). And as many have pointed out the small text is annoying.

As of now I'd give it an 8/10. Once I get to see more of the world though and really get into the main story I might upgrade my score. It does have flaws though that a lot of reviewers seem to be overlooking.

Controls are really not good - I thought they would get better with practice, but I'm still struggling. It all seems very stiff and unresponsive and on a horse it's even worse.

Started out with keyboard and mouse, then switched to controller which was a bit better, but can't really fix the main problem which is a very 'blocky' movement.

I've kind of gotten used to the FOV/Zoom outdoors, but indoors and when using Witcher sense it is still annoying. "Oh you're trying to do that thing where you're supposed to heighten your senses and see everything around you clearer? Hang on - let's zoom in close so there's a big body between you and what you're trying to see!" Why?!

For all my complaining I really do like it though - it's just the fov and controller-stuff is always there and so it's a constant annoyance that makes it hard to lose yourself in the game. Which is all the more of a shame since the whole game world is so amazingly immersive with great characters, quests and landscape.

I think getting rid of the middle sort of jog speed altogether would really help. Just have a slow walk and one run speed. Walk with the stick and run if you hold a button. There's not much of a difference between the run without holding the button and full sprint, anyway. It also serves no tactical purpose, as far as I can tell.

Found this tip at http://forums.cdprojektred.com/threa...87#post1658887

Quote:
4. Improve movement responsiveness when using a controller

To increase the responsiveness of in-game movement using a controller, go to "The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt\bin\config\platform\pc\", open the "platformgameplay.ini" file with a text editor and tweak the following variable:

LeftStickSensitivity"=1.0
Helps a lot if you use a controller

May have to set the file to read-only or it may get overwritten by other setting changes in-game.

Using a mouse and when I try to move the camera slowly it's really juddery. Is there a way to make it smoother? It runs at a steady 30 fps but I'll try turning the settings down when I get home or try a controller.
