Probably not going to bother picking this up. Honestly Paradox's DLC policy is a turnoff, played way less Eu4 than Eu3 because of it. Maybe I'll sail the seven seas and play for a few hours but otherwise skipping it.

It's a bummer. They hook you with such great games and then string you along for years with countless DLC.

That is basically the opposite of a bummer.

EU4 was GOAT game at release and DLC just made it GOATer. Haters gonna hate.

Right? Not many other games have years of support, new content, and replayability

I've probably spent 150 on eu4 over what 3-4 years and got like 1000+ hours of fun

The dlc are also super cheap if you wait for sales, like $5. And the base game here is $40 instead of $60 for AAA games so you are already ahead.

Paradox games are easily the best value per dollar. I don't understand the hate on their DLC.

Sometimes its a little suspect like introducing a new negative mechanic that you cant really effectively combat without buying the dlc. But yeah overall value:$ ratio is of the charts.

There really is a special place in hell for people who pirate from niche developers. If you actually don't find it that compelling, maybe just don't play it?

If this game was not Paradox, and I was just looking at the trailers, I would not actually see that much to get excited about.

Distant Worlds looks like it will remain the deepest and most fun (imo) 4X imo.

Will still buy close to day 1 though.

re: EU4 DLC.
i have no issue with it. a lot of DLC is adding cosmetics, or a few new levels or characters. EU4 DLC is legit new mechanics. Also, give the DLC 6 months, and its $5 anyway.

Paradox gets benefit of the doubt as my most played games by hours in my steam Library are:
EU3
EU4
CK2
Xcom2

Or just don't buy the DLC and don't use the corresponding free patches.

I have Distant Worlds - Steam tells me I've played for 63 hours. It's a good game and I kinda dig the complexity, but the game feels so hollow - it feels lifeless in a way that I can't remember a single memorable thing that has happened to me in those 63 hours of gameplay.

I do love how the civilian sector is portrayed, but I'm tilted to death by the Pirates and the warfare system in general.

I know I'm probably missing something and I'm playing like a total noob, but as a veteran strategy gamer, I feel like if I have 63 hours of play in a game, I should probably feel like I understand the game - and to be honest...I'm not even sure I understand what is going on in Distant Worlds.

Anyway Stellaris should be a blast. I think this might be the first Paradox game where I get in to the multiplayer side - feels like with symmetrical starts there can be a whole lot of fun involved.

DW takes about 10-20 mins of u tubes and one post on the Matrix forum and its all gravy.

That seems on about par with paradox titles.

The campaign in DW is the GOAT campaign in any 4X, it is simply brilliant.

Also I love how the warfare system works in that game, really does the grand admiral feeling really well.

Stellaris Dev Diary #30 - Late Game Crises

Quote:
Hi folks!
We’re getting close to release and there is not much left to talk about that we haven’t already covered. The only remaining major feature is, I believe, the “Late Game Crises” events, and I really don’t want to spoil them, so bear with me if I’m being slightly vague this time…

Now, last week I talked about how large empires will have to worry about keeping all manner of political Factions in check. This is one of the ways we try to keep the game interesting and challenging past that crucial point when you often tend to lose interest in most strategy games and feel that you’ve already won. It’s not much fun to spend hours of your life mopping up the final resistance just so you’ll get to see that sweet acknowledgement saying “Victory!”. Another way to keep a game interesting is through random occurrences that can upset your plans even at a very late stage. This is where dangerous technologies and late game crises enter the picture.

Some technologies are clearly marked as being “risky”, for example Robot Workers. Now, you might not always risk having your victory snatched out of your grasp, but in this case at least, you really are gambling with the fate of the galaxy. Just researching such a technology is safe; it’s the actual use of it that carries the danger. For example, the more sentient Robot Pops there are in the galaxy, the higher the risk is that they will come to deem organic life unfit to exist and rise up in a well-planned revolt. Unless crushed quickly and with overwhelming force, such a Machine Empire will quickly get out of hand and threaten all the remaining empires in the galaxy. Sentient robots will out-research and outproduce everyone. If the revolt is centered in a powerful rival empire, you’ll need to think carefully about when you want to intervene; a savvy player might time it just right and be able to mop up both the robots and the remnants of the rival empire. Leave it too long, however, and the robots will overwhelm you.

The idea is that you will usually see one of the possible late game crises every time you play, but the chances increase the longer it takes you to win. However, it’s very rare to see more than one in the same game. The different threats vary in nature and behaviour, and can offer opportunities as well as posing an enormous danger to your survival. For example, it might be possible to reverse engineer some really unique technologies from these galactic threats, but the geography of the galaxy might also change in your favor…

That’s it for now my friends! Next week, we’ll change tack completely, and do a two-part, in-depth guide for modders.
So late game crises that we know of so far: AI rebellions, intergalactic invaders, inter-dimensional invaders triggered by researching certain FTL tech iirc

Re: DLC, I guess you're right. It does make a lot of sense. This is really the way all DLC should be.

New dev diary on modding art (characters, ships) has this insane screenshot with 5000(!) stars:

Quote:
We have recently worked on support for static galaxies. This will allow users to create a specific galaxy to use for specific scenarios. In this test we have more than 5000 stars, which still renders smoothly. Might have to optimize the game a bit though
