Spelunky (XBLA Version)

Anyone else dropped the $15 for this? I have and I'm addicted. For those of you don't know what Spelunky, it's a platforming/rogue game, which means as Drake and now a million teenagers now say, YOLO. Also, levels are randomly generated. Originally a game you could play for free online (which you still can), the game on XBLA is much updated, with increased difficulty and improved graphics.

Old Spelunky:

New Spelunky:

You play as an explorer who tries to make it through four worlds, with each world having four levels. There is a big ramp up in difficulty between the first and second world. I've died around 250 times and have only made it to the third world twice. People who like the sadistic nature of the Binding of Issac would enjoy this game. Spelunky is without a doubt much harder. Unlike Binding of Issac, you don't permanently keep any items throughout your various playthroughs. People at Xbox360Achievements.com have given it a 10/10 in terms of difficulty. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this game - it's loads of fun. There's shopkeepers who will terrorize you on later levels if you steal from/attack one of them, damsels you can save or sacrifice to the gods, and badass weapons like shotguns and freeze rays. Purchase it if you haven't already!

It's like crack. I can't stop playing it. Spelunky's terrible for poker because 1) I'm not playing as much poker and 2) video games, for me, are destressors and this game stresses me the **** out. I've only got to the final boss once, but I have tunnels built to the second and third world now.

Re: Spelunky (XBLA Version)

bump ...such a nasty game!
Cool graphics, very accurate controlls and a nice indiana jones like setting.
But difficult as hell! Everything kills u + no save option make it really tough.
After two weeks i finally made it to level 2, lol...
I am sure that many of you hardcore gamers would love it. Def. worth the 15$...

I haven't played this, but I'm impressed that someone apparently managed to actually make a decent game with one of those ****ty "make your own video games without even having to learn how to program!" programs.

Re: Spelunky (XBLA Version)

Games with real difficulty had all but died. Tough for me to play single-player "games" that are essentially just walkthroughs with infinite save points and lives. I wish developers would do more stuff like this.

Yah, original was done in GameMaker, but the new one is XNA. Do you feel the same way about Unity3d or UDK? There are some AAA games made with the latter.

Re: Spelunky (XBLA Version)

I'm not familiar with Unity3d, but Unreal (from what I know about it) seems more like an "engine" than a "game maker" - like, they're not marketing it to morons and saying "you can make your own video game, just point and click!", it's a complete, powerful, and flexible development kit.

Re: Spelunky (XBLA Version)

Right, I didn't mean to imply they were the same. UDK is also a game development environment, but of course you can do almost anything in it by coding or scripting. GameMaker is on the other end of the spectrum, but it's still going to require some scripting to produce anything decent.

I'm not all that surprised that someone was able to make a decent game with it. It's just that 95+% of the people with no technical background are that annoying "Yo I got an awesome idea for a video game, brah" guy. And rarely will those people try to make anything original; instead they produce ****ty fan fiction.

Re: Spelunky (XBLA Version)

You would be surprised how many prototypes are made with GameMaker. A lot of devs will often use it to experiment ideas without commiting much effort. UDK and Unity are in a completely different league though. I personally love Unity. Unity is turning into the new UDK in terms of popularity.

The XBLA version of Spelunky wasn't done in XNA.
