Is anyone playing mas payne 3 right now? I loved the first two games and this one seems like it's getting good feedback in general, much better then d3 anyway, may change my gaming plans today.

Re: Rockstar Games Announces Max Payne 3 for Winter 2009

Bought it but only had time to get through like 1/2 hour. Pretty fantastic so far on a very small sample size. Maybe this flying under the radar will end up being a blessing in disguise so there is no letdown from the hype around L.A. Noire or to some degree GTA4. Reviewers just killing D3 may make it look better too.

Are they? I haven't been following the D3 launch too closely but on Metacritic the 3 critic reviews are 90/90/80 (obv user reviews are awful, but that's what happens when you **** up a game launch...)

Re: Rockstar Games Announces Max Payne 3 for Winter 2009

Well, I have *no idea* why I care about the D3 reviews cuz it's just not the type of game that would appeal to me no matter how good it was made (I bought D1 at full price and stopped playing after a couple of hours and gave it to a friend...just not my thing), but I spent an inordinate amount of time the last day reading D3 reviews at metacritic and gamespot and the criticisms do seem to have some merit. The DRM thing, the complete lack of customization, the auction house, the brevity of the campaign, and then the claim that Blizzard is padding stats with bogus "10" reviews and that sites are loathe to criticize such a large release because they're in bed to some degree with the companies who make them.

Dunno, I guess I've just come to view some game companies as The Man and like it when people rise up to complain about a poorly implemented or greedy product. I read your OP on Tiger Woods and that's why I vote with my wallet and avoid buying stuff that just leads to me paying even more money on the back-end.

With all that said, no idea why I should care. Not buying it either way.

Yea, most big AAA released games cannot be overly badmouthed by the major gaming review publications or the game publishers will pull advertising. It's such a sick industry with only a handful of people controlling a market with tens of millions of buyers.

When you see a hyped release get under a 9.0 or something than you know it really has some major flaws.

Re: Rockstar Games Announces Max Payne 3 for Winter 2009

Offtopic about review sites: Completely agree with Doggz and tuq, the whole Gamespot/Jeff Gertsmann fiasco is clear proof that it happens.

Ontopic: I'm about half way through the campaign and it's amazing so far. Shootouts are so fun in this game. My only complaint, and this might only affect me, is that it can get a little draining playing it. It's very intense and I obviously suck at the game because I die a lot and I'm playing it on normal. It's not frustrating, but I can't put in long hours playing it like I can with other games. Production values are insane. The level of detail in just about every aspect is crazy.

Played about 2 hours of online with some friends and that's great too. It's chaos but really fun. Don't know how much longevity it has though. Only played team deathmatch so far so I'm looking forward to trying the other modes. Overall I'd recommend it to anyone that likes story driven shooters. If you're not going to play online though, I'd say just rent it.

Re: Rockstar Games Announces Max Payne 3 for Winter 2009

the problem i have with the game is this:

Theres a massive design flaw in making an action shooter where you have this diving shooting mechanic and being able to roll about on the floor when as soon as you jump out of cover for 5 seconds you get nailed by a thousand bullets. I want to feel bad ass by running and diving into a room taking out 5 guys, but unfortunately i take out 3 of them and then im left writhing about on the floor with little to no health and get dead pretty quickly. The times i do manage to get up i have to get up, and then get back down again to get back into cover taking some more bullets in that painfully slow animation. Could you not just roll into cover instead of standing up like a moron?

Ive found the correct play in most situations is just to get in a room, get into cover where you cant be flanked and just wait for everyone to come to you, slowly taking them out. This isnt how i want to play the game but they kind of force you to do that. I might change the setting to easy to see if it makes it more forgiving of a run and gun style.

I wont criticise the story too much so far except that it seems painfully dull and they give you absolutely no control except for when a bunch of guys come in the room which makes it seems kind of generic. Im usually like Rockstars attempt at stories and characters, even LA Noires was watchable despite being dumb. But here its just long cut scene of Max whining, then kill all the guys in a room, long cutscene, kill some more drones. I havent got that far though so hope it gets interesting. Theres enough there to keep me playing but at the moment im not impressed and expect a lot more from Rockstar.

There's a mute all button in the lobby. Not sure if you can do it mid match though.
