Yeah, programming the AI to respond appropriately to the player swimming is definitely an additional layer of complexity. In gta4 on the lower wanted levels (ie no helicopter pursuit), going for a swim was the cheap and silly way out. Though not quite as cheap as taking a walk on the subway tracks which would baffle law enforcement completely.

way too many people itt pondering whether or not anyone in the "wild" west was able to swim or not. seriously, come on.

game looks awesome. I really enjoyed GTAIV, so I think I will like this one. Gonna have to wait a few weeks to get it though, way too busy with stuff.

Let's party up?
I'm gonna get this shortly as this is all my daughter plays and it seems cool..

apparently some savvy developer could corner the untapped swimfan market with a timely release this summer.

you go from pool to pool engaging in epic breaststroke competions for fame and cold hard cash, which could then be used to unlock new venues (lakes, rivers and even eventually the ocean!) and buy some sweet swimmer swag.

online will have 2+2ers jizzing their pants with not only the ability to butterfly-battle their buddies, but also a giant kiddie pool 'social room' where they can relax, frolic about splashing water on each other and show off their newest speedo and shower cap bling.

Sounds awesome, but I'd be willing to settle for a Sunken Treasures of Lake Don Julio expansion dlc.

I just reread this thread to confirm, and it's official:

nobody actually complained about the lack of swimming.

Here the negative replies (including yours) are basically insinuating that Rockstar's explanation is BS and they didn't want to/couldn't put swimming in before the game came out. On much of the rest of the internet it's "OMG gotta have my swimmin!" more than the complaints here.

I agree people were complaining about it on GameFAQs and elsewhere I'm sure.

swimming in GTA sucks anyway and its just about boring in every game that has it.

I bet after reading this thread a game developer would get the idea that "Michael Phelps, Go For The Gold" could be a best seller title.

Red Dead Redemption: hands-on with the final code

Impressions from a four hour playthrough (appeared in the Guardian UK). Apparently British game reviewers have a much more literary writing style than what we're used to in America ("prostitutes languidly promenading the balconies", "this sense of growing displacement adds poignancy to the action").

Good news: R* motion-captured a horse on a treadmill, so the riding animations should be authentic.
Bad news: No mention was made of motion-capturing man or horse in a swimming pool.

British people always write and speak better than Americans from similar socioeconomic backgrounds. They just have better literary educations I guess.

The review definitely psyched me up. I'm a bit skeptical though because R* supposedly more or less buys off reviewers, and that review was rather gushing.

WTF is this the point of this game without a full swim mode? All my favorite games feature abundant swimming levels and I in no way find these tacked on, poor controlling, and a waste of time. I haven't beat God of War 3 because I just keep swimming around in the small Hades area. Shame RDR had a chance to be something really special.
