If Protoss can have their own thread...

Terrans are my fav race, let's use this thread to discuss MP terran strategies.
I'm a beginner so I use a standard 3 barrack marauder/marine opener, worked out quite well so far.

Gogo Terran

Yeah working on the 3 rax build as well. I'm unsure what the best time to push is, currently I'm trying for my first push when stim is about finished (so that it'll be done when I arrive at villain's base)

I'm also undecided on my transitions usually I try to go factory->starport and toss in a second gas whenever it feels right and switch the starport to reactor and get medivacs. Sometimes I just build more barracks. I also want to work an ebay into the build so that I can get the upgrades

I expand whenever it feels right but ideally I want to have won before expanding :P

Ideally I'd adapt upon scouting but I'm not good enough for that yet so I just build more marines, less marauders if I scout air and that's about it

I am by no means good. I understand a lot of the strategy, bla bla bla, but I just don't execute very well. I haven't played any ladder in the past month probably and have been whoring campaign so far because its fun, but during beta I was probably high-gold or low-plat or something.

That said, in general, pushing as an upgrade finishes is good, so that timing is fine, especially since you are still new and its important that you get all of your timing/build down.

The easiest time for you to expand is when you move out. Just grab an SCV and move him to your expansion as you are a-moving. Once you hit 400, build that CC.

For follow-ups, like you said, its going to be pretty dependent on what your opponent's tech looks like. While you're attacking you should throw down a factory and then a starport. From there you can either continue w/ MM and grab some Medivacs as well, transition to vikings/tanks, hellions/banshees, etc.

Really, you'd benefit from doing the challenges to get a good grasp of what to build against what. Go to Single Player, Challenges, and there's some good stuff there for you.

Yeah i'm having trouble too when my first attacks get blocked well and by the time my factory is running the enemy is knocking on my door with me being low on marines/marauders ... still learning here

I just picked up my copy yesterday but probably won't get into this too much until I build my new computer as I'll be using my bros old laptop.

That said I would like to somewhat know what I'm doing when I start playing. I am a terran only player but only got to play a handful of games in beta so I didn't really get familiar with the new units. Is there a good site that has a new tech tree and explanation of the new units? I know there is a mega thread that probably has that information but I don't have time to sift through all 8k posts. Thanks for the help.

The beautiful thing about terran is just the multitude of strategies you can do.

Of course, they all stem from the basic order that nearly everyone should do:

10 supply
12 barracks
13 refinery
15 orbital command

Ha, thanks. I came in here to ask for a build order. Funny, I just played my first terran game just to realize that medics are only in the campaign(as are gols and vultures it looks like). I got really confused. Thank goodness for the practice matches.

Gonna do my first placement match, see how this goes.

good luck, most important thing is to close your entrance quickly..., zergs tend to use like 4 zerglings at the start, which can kill your entire base

I play hyper aggro in the first 10 minutes, and if I don't win quickly I almost always lose.

I got into a sick heated match with Terran v Protoss in the bottom of Diamond league last night, really back and forth game. I bunker rushed him, but he survived and fought me off, then he attacked me 2 or 3 times but I barely fought him off each time.

Then, in the final battle it looked like I was a sure favorite, as I had some good air to back up my marines and marauders against only his void rays.... then it turns out that Banshees can only shoot at ground units, and I got destroyed. fml.

1 and 1 so far...

So when do you go medivac? I've been trying to get to it as fast as possible.

I've gone with that standard start strat to 3 barracks, fact, starport. One barrack with reactor the other two the maurader upgrade.

I have no idea how its working to be honest, lol.

I've been doing 2v2 in practice league, and trying out random stuff. Gonna try and use this order for some 1v1 matches before I do my placement matches.

Wow, just had a 40 min fight against a zerg player.

Started as marine/marauders but didn't do much to his base so I teched factory + starpoint and got some medivacs, dropped some troops behind his base and killed some workers, match goes on, I expand to eventually 2 more command centers while he has like 4 or 5, things didn't look good but finally got a decent battlecruiser fleet and sniped out like 3 of his bases, in the end he had his 2 bases left with no more minerals to mine, gg and I win! nice :P (I'm now ranked nr.3 ... in bronze )

I'm suspecting the answer is "lol nope" but I was wondering:
1) Iirc there's a mpa with high yield minerals closed off by two destructible rocks but no rocks in front of the minerals...is it +EV to just load up your command center with SCV's and fly there (you're autowalled in but have very little space ldo)?

2) What about going for the fastest possible Orbital Command by building a rax first (kinda like reaper rushes) then orbital upgrade as soon as you have the resources for it (and only pump SCVs/build deptots)...if you just did this instead of the regular BO how many more minerals would you have at say the 3 minute mark...possibly also fiddle with a supply depot drop instead of one mule or something

My "open" is to get to 10 supply, build a supply depot, directly after that same SCV builds a Barracks. Next SCV out builds a bararcks, and supply depots as needed.

As my 2nd rax is about to finish, I build another, and another and build a few depots to make sure I have plenty of suppply for my army. As the 2nd rax is building I usually get a refinery for gas and start building that up later. I start pumping out some Marines and immediately build my 3rd rax, during this whole time I'm pumping out SCVs as needed.

Get an army up asap a mix of Marines and Marauders, and go attack/probe the enemy base. As your army is moving towards the other player's base, expand if possible. The reason for this opening is twofold : probe his base, see what he's building and to end the game right there if he teched and doesn't have addequate defense.

Surprisingly, it works pretty well. I've caught a few people who were teching, and a few who were expanding and didn't have the army to defend, and the game ended right there. On the other hand, if they did defend I backed up and started teching up to stronger units to handle his counterattack. Seems like a pretty solid opening to me.

1 it can work but definitely not standard.
2. you'll probably have to cut SCVs if you this earlier then what luckay recommended, which is going to hurt your economy. and for what it's worth MULEs>Supply drops in terms of money gained. a MULE will mine roughly 270 minerals in it's life while a supply depot costs a 100
