PSVR - PlayStation Virtual Reality

Picked up one of these over the weekend and as I was unpacking it, felt both nostalgia from remembering being a kid on christmas morning unwrapping my first video game console, and like I was about to jump into the future.

When I turned it on, standing up and moving around to see the projected menu screen from different angles was really interesting. The first time an immersive 3-D world hit the lenses I knew that the hype was real.

At a price point of $500-$600 USD for people who already have a ps4, this seems like the most value VR on the market, and the graphics and experience have been nothing but stellar for me so far.

First demo I checked out was Eve Valkyrie, and after one demo and a bit of online research I purchased the full game.

I think the content right now feels fairly light, but when some huge titles start shipping on this thing its going to be incredible.

Ive played most of the launch games. Rez, Thumper, and VR Worlds are good. As a horror fan, I really liked Rush Of Blood a lot too. Theres other titles Ive enjoyed as well. Batman VR though, another level, just so awesome. You have to try that one if you havent already. You wont regret it.

Looks really cool. I was wondering why only some of the games are supported, and if all games in the future will be?

Generally speaking, games need to be built from the ground up for VR to be done right. Its not as simple as just porting them over. That usually ends up at best in a sub par experience, and at worst a puke fest. VR is a different beast. Certain rules need to be followed especially regarding locomotion to create a pleasant experience. There are PC programs however that allow you to do just that on Vive and Rift if you are brave or tolerant enough to try, but Sony has set strict policy to ensure quality in this regard I assume to ensure early adopters come away feeling positive in regards to its product. Its also much more demanding on the hardware.

So mostly all the PS VR games you see are actually new games, even the ones that sound familiar like Drive Club. I do believe however that you will see more and more big studios jump in the game though as the popularity and technology grows though FWIW.

Re: PSVR - PlayStation Virtual Reality

I mean yea, I'm playing it and it is absolutely phenomenal.

I turned on the PSVR for the first time, played only the Eve demo, and then bought the game, and have only played Eve.

I haven't even played any of the other demos or anything yet, just Eve. It is that good.

Yes. Ive learned I can be sensitive to VR movement in certain situations. I can play EVE but it does make me feel a tad queasy in spots and the genre in general really isnt up my alley so its not my personal favorite. Objectively speaking though, IMO its very good. The multiplayer gives it more replay value than a lot of the currently available VR games. Visually it doesnt look as sharp as it does on PC, as to be expected, but it looks pretty good and is very immersive. If you like space fighting games ala Star Wars it might be a must buy. You can demo it for free though if you are iffy or are worried how barrel rolling and such will make you feel in VR so you can be sure before buying it as it is one of the more pricey launch titles.

Re: PSVR - PlayStation Virtual Reality

This is going to sound weird, but I've found you really need to change your perspective on what is up and what is down when you are in space in Eve.

If you just get your mind around the fact that there is no rightside up you won't feel as queasy when are flying "upside down".

Re: PSVR - PlayStation Virtual Reality

Damn, I'm running out of reasons to not buy the VR, I love myself some star wars like fighter stuff. Seems like a great test to see if you puke all over yourself because of the VR as well imo

@larry
Thats exactly what helped me in some earlier star wars stuff, there is no up and down in space.

Eve is amazing. Rigs is amazing. I've only gotten nauseated once so far in many hours of playing. I do wear anti nausea wristbands tho. Def recommend em.

Yeah, that makes sense. Its actually the horizontal turning in some games that Ive had trouble with the most for whatever reason. In Battlezone and Eve Ive felt it. I also feel it in stick turning first person games like Here They Lie as well, but thats more common I think. Im not sure why, but I felt better turning in Luge and in DC FWIW, two games that on average I believe tend to affect more people in that way than BZ and Eve. To be honest though, Ive been really cautious. Ive heard the horror stories about motion sickness and how sometimes just trying to fight through can be a bad idea so I havent really tried to push it much. The minute I felt it Ive quit. Ill definitely give those titles more of a look in the future because they are really cool games. Im not saying VR legs is a real thing, but like you were describing, getting into the proper mindset and a giving it more of a chance and some repetition might help.

Btw, Allumette is pretty cool. Im sure most people have tried it by now, but for those that havent, you really should. Its not a game, its kind of like a animated 3D movie. Its free in the PS store and its a great example of some of the entertainment potential VR has outside the realm of traditional gaming. Its also a great showcase for younger or older friends and family IMO. Its really well done and a touching story thats super chill compared to some of the other more intense experiences.

So is it worth it for someone playing laying down in bed? My guess is not.

Mostly interrested in Summer Lesson for the moment

There are some applications like theater mode which allows you to play all of your standard PS4 games or watch movies lying in your bed if you so desire. But yeah, for most VR games you will be sitting or standing.

I haven't played Summer Lesson, but in talking with people who have, it is receiving high marks for immersion, even if the game play is somewhat lacking. Some have called it the most immersive launch title they've played FWIW.

I know this isnt PSVR but seem to be the most appropriate plays to post it.

Re: PSVR - PlayStation Virtual Reality

Played Batman VR last night for first time. Only for an hour, but that experience alone has made me 100% happy with my purchase of the PSVR

Re: PSVR - PlayStation Virtual Reality

Yeah Batman is incredible. Played it early on, decided that first hour was worth the price of entry alone and everything else is now a freeroll

I did buy Tethered, didn't try it yet.
