This can't be right, right? We're only going to be able to use the headset included with the console at launch?

Planning On Using An Existing Headset With A PS4? Read This

Yesterday, we received a note from Astro Gaming (whom we've recently spoken with about next-gen audio) indicating that their headsets will work for chat on the PlayStation 4… just not right away. This prompted us to dig a little deeper and find out what gaming headset owners can expect on November 15.

The answer we received from Sony is complicated. If you have a Sony-branded PULSE gaming headset (or the elite edition of that product), you will need to wait for a system update coming in the future. It seems that those will not work at all at launch.

Any other headset that relies on bluetooth for chat will not work at all. If you have something that relies on USB for chat (like the Astro mixamps and Astro A50 wireless system), you'll eventually be able to use those. An update will be coming in the future.

Any headset that relies on digital optical for game audio will continue to provide that out of the box. You just won't be able to chat yet.

Sony are playing a clever game here imo as one week it looks like there will be a shortage and next thing I'm getting mails like this.
Got this same email from Amazon a day or 2 ago. On holiday so haven't checked the bundles but have until 16th to do so.

It confirmed whatever I choose, including original order, would arrive on release day because I pre ordered so long ago.

Yeah, I don't think I want my pre-order now. I need to find some verification on this. This is unimaginable.

I don't know if you're saying that because you think we're overreacting or what but I'm not going to play BF4, etc. without a headset and mic. You do realize that that is what that article says, right? It doesn't say we need to buy a new headset. It says there won't be any compatible headsets available at launch. How in the world do they wait until just over a month before launch to let people know that, "Oh, btw. No headsets other than the earpiece we put in the box will be compatible with our system at launch."

I mean, I'm not actually angry or anything but there's no denying that this is ridiculous. It's definitely enough to make me reconsider my purchase. I'm sure there are plenty of others who game with headsets who are reconsidering their day one purchase as well.

I totally get why people are upset and agree that this restriction is ridiculous. I doubt this will stay a problem for long though.

I just think it's funny that this is the reason you guys are considering cancelling a pre order.

I never said I was cancelling my pre-order. I just find it annoying.

Doesn't the PS4 come with an ear bud headset thing? Better than nothing at least.

It depends on how long they say it's going to be. If it's just a couple weeks or something, that's fine. If it's going to be early 2014 before I can use a headset, I'll wait to pick one up.

True. I mean it's not a deal breaker. But when you spend whatever amount on a special headset. Which they say is going to be compatible, it is kind of annoying to not be able to use it day one.

there is no reason they can't have an update for this ready on or near launch day.

but then again Sony doesn't have a good track record with this type of thing.

You would think so, but they have already ruled launch day out.

It seems like if you want a console to work perfectly when you buy it you should always wait a year or so so they can patch up all the bugs. They always have issues upon release dates these days.

I understand that. I don't think asking for a gaming console to be compatible with even one gaming headset on the entire planet other than the $5 one they put in the box is asking too much, though, lol.

So I wasn't planning on buying a PS4 at launch, but my PS3 died last night, and it seems silly to replace it with the new system being just a month away. Any idea how long I'll be waiting if I order the "standard" edition from amazon.ca? I understand preorders are sold out everywhere, and I'm not really interested in paying 1.5x or 2x list price to buy it from someone on craigslist. Next best option? Will there be any units being sold at launch day (aside from those that were preordered)?

Have you checked your local indie retailers or those in smaller cities? I picked up a PS2 at launch from a retailer in an army-base city out in the sticks. My roommate at uni then sold a guide on how to find a PS2 on EBay saying basically the above - all be it in a whole lot more words - for $10. He sold nearly $2000 worth of the guides and received 100% feedback so I'm guessing it had to have worked for somebody else as well!

Any suggestions for release day game purchases, now that Watchdogs is delayed? I've ordered the Killzone Shadow Fall bundle as it's cost effective, but not really a fan of true FPS.

Not FIFA either.

Last few games I played have been Max Payne 3, GTA, Mass Effect, Tombraider, Uncharted 3 - that kind of stuff.

Gone off NFS (nothing compares to NFS 2: Underground ).

Quite liked the first Infamous so that's an option. Not played any Assassins Creed either, so would that be worth a whirl?

I don't know what there is besides AC4, really. I would hold off on a purchase, though, as it releases on 10/29 for 360 and PS3. If the reviews say that it's more AC2 than AC3, that's a very good thing.

I'll probably go for that. About time I tried one of them. Will wait for the reviews though, cheers.

Krank looks kind of kooky. Not sure about it yet.

Will still be playing GTA no doubt so don't really want to buy for the sake of it.

I bought Killzone 2 and thought it was terrible, so if you aren't sold on FPS games to begin with then I'm not sure if jumping on that bundle is a great idea.
