Re: PS3 vs Xbox 360
i have both
360 is better value for money unless you plan on using the blu ray player extensively. at that point the ps3 is better value.
ps3 has some nice exclusives though. if I didn't have mine now I'd be buying it for gran turisimo at the end of this year anyway.

Comparing it to an N64 controller is such a bad, bad comparison I have to wonder if that person even has tried the 360 controller.
|
yeah, i'm probably wrong. looked up the n64 controller and turns out i was really thinking of the gamecube controller (position of the left joystick mainly). and for whatever reason i was thinking that xbox had wierd buttons besides the 4 regular ones and L1/L2, R1/R2 or put them in wierd places like gamecube - but the layout of the 4 main ones seems pretty standard from the pic. my real problem is probably that they call the 4 buttons different names that i am used to. it's the exact same layout as SNES except that x and y and a and b are reversed - which is very hard for me to relearn. i eventually got the hang of playstation in the mid-90s, but that just confuses things further for me, because its X is B on SNES and A on xbox. X is now in 3 different spots depending on the system.
anyhow- i'm not a real video game player. i get madden and a hockey game every year, and that's about it, and the controls are programmed into my brain and can't be unlearned, so frustrates me when systems and games change them. can't teach an old dog new tricks.

I think SOCOM and Heavenly Sword are both very good too. Heavenly Sword has the best motion controller sections I've seen of any game.

That's not true anymore. Arcade users can get a free 20GB HDD here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/ha...te/default.htm It's not specified if all arcade units qualify though. Perhaps somebody else can elaborate.

Re: PS3 vs Xbox 360
I have both. I play my 360 daily while the PS3 sits there. But I'm sure I'll play PS3 more once Killzone 2 and MLB 09 the Show come out.

Ah, just googled. So you can get 512MB for free or a 20GB for £12.99, I guess that's $20? Not bad for a full working system + HDD for $220.
And if somebody wants a blu-ray player then *gasp* they could buy a blu-ray player. They're plummeting in price and are only going to get cheaper. Blu-ray is no longer relevant since the price of a 360 + stand-alone blu-ray player is now cheaper than the cheapest PS3.

Re: PS3 vs Xbox 360
If you have the setup to take advantage of blu-ray, PS3 is. Else, xbox is. I have both and play them about equally as much. However, xbox netflix streaming is very good, although selection is fairly poor.

None of the new PS3's are backwards compatible. That's a shame too because I grew up on the PS2 and it had some of the greatest games ever (Spyro ftw) that I'd love to play again, but for some stupid ****ing reason they made the new PS3's have zero backwards compatibility.

If you like to watch movies and play single player games then I'd recommend the PS3. If you have Netflix though you can stream it right off your xbox in amazing quality for most content which is a great feature.

I question, and I mean that literally not in a snotty way, how true that Netflix biz is. I mean, in high quality. On my PC in both my office and home, both on cable, the quality of movies transmitted is pretty meh to say the least. This is not really down to equipment either, but if it were, my PC would beat an X-Box anyway. It's down to how much you can get coming down your lines and/or how much Netflix is willing to send. So ... considering my PC-based Netflix movie streaming is so mediocre, I wonder whether your average user is really getting movies that look very good via their X-boxes.

The Netflix HD quality is as good or better HD quality than what I am getting through my hd cable channels. However the library is still growing but I am seeing new content added more frequently than I had expected.

Yeah, it boggles my mind how they do this. Non-HD content looks meh-ish though (although I'm on a 58" TV which is going to exacerbate those kinds of issues).

I heard a rumor that Sony is considering abandoning the system because they are just taking some serious lossess up the ass atm.

Re: PS3 vs Xbox 360
Another thing to consider for the 360 is the cost of Xbox Live. While it is worth it for most gamers, it still is 50 bucks a year more than PS3 costs. Another thing missing from 360 out of the box is wireless internet connectivity. IIRC the adapter costs $100. You can use your laptop to supply a connection if you prefer but not everyone can do that.
HDD + Live Fee + Adapter price can bring the purchase price closer than most people like to acknowledge. If you buy regular alkaline batteries for your 360 controllers you are out even more cash.
