PS3 - 'System has become hot' message PS3 - 'System has become hot' message

Was playing some MW2 this morning when a message suddenly popped up in the top-right corner of the screen saying 'System has become hot.....' and the PS3 turned itself off before I could read the rest.

Tried doing some googling and couldn't really narrow it down to what the problem is. Some people say it's sign of imminent hardware failure, others say just ventilate it better.

It's a 120 GB slim model that I got through the PokerStars VIP store at the end of November last year. I keep it well ventilated and I had been playing for about 90 mins before I got the message.

I'm about to try getting hold of Sony support, I was just wondering if anyone has the same problem? If so, any luck resolving the issue?

Edit:If it is about to die, how do I go about saving all my data? Is a standard memory stick enough for the job?

Any help much appreciated.

I can only comment on your edit.

I have tried a 4gb stick and the automatic save-all function and the ps3 told me to gtfo because 4gb are not enough. So i had to manually copy all the savegames on the stick, and they are quite small. Even a 64MB stick would be more than enough for the savegames.

I guess they save a list on a Sony server, what stuff you bought in the PSstore, and allow you to redownload it. But im not sure about that.

Trophies are synchronised with their server, so just make sure to go online one time.

You can download everything as many times as you want

I will tell you that the msg + the PS3 turning itself off is almost certainly temperature/overheating related. You can ventilate the system as well as you can, but if the mfg forgot to put thermal compound on a heatsink somewhere for example then there's nothing you can do short of sending it back to the oem.

Where is your PS3 located? You do not want the thing on carpet and if you can avoid it you don't want it somewhat enclosed. I have mine out in the complete open on a little block. A big hardback book (I use a teaching textbook) works as well. If I'm having somewhat of a long session I just lift the PS3 up and flip the book over to the cool side.

I wonder if a laptop cooler would work plugging in the USB to the PS3?

I have a laptop cooler from when I had a laptop. I just saw it and thought about it because of this thread, and I was thinking about ways you could have a stand or something that would allow for complete circulation of air around the entire ps3 instead of putting it on a book, desk, or floor.

Keep in mind that these products usually add a considerable amount of "noise" to your system. Probably worth it if you are having overheating issues, but just a heads up.

I have a slim and while it can get warm all consoles do that. I haven't read much about the slims having overheating problems...though my blu ray lens is already showing signs of being a POS.

Try puttin a fan in the back to blow the air away from ur system. A friend of mine said that the guy at Gamestop told him to put a fan in the back like I have it set up so that the air can be more easily moved away from the ps3 otherwise you will risk overheating.. I got a ps3 from stars at in the same month you did and havent had this problem and I run it for 5+ hrs str8 quite frequently.
