I was surprised to randomly see Mike Mcdonald appear in a Kickstarter video... game looks very different from other games. That said I wish I wasn't when talking about how much I like it since so many phonies in poker just pimp out anything if its profitable.

I've probably logged more hours this year at Prismata than poker and think its the best strategy game I've played. For those who haven't played its somewhat similar to a turn based starcraft with a dominion-esque mechanic of having the units each building builds be different every game.

For like 5 minutes it seems complicated, but the mechanics are simple and its quite easy to learn the rules. Once that is done it gets compicated and for your next few thousand hours it gets complicated. The lack of RNG and the extent of balance after the initial units are selected makes it extremely strategically deep.

you underestimate reymad, after he went 1-5 in the prismata HS streamer cup (he won against Sjow who apparently played for the first time while the others all practiced beforehand) reynad said

"well in general I like that there is no rng, but if there is no rng there is no mechanism to catch up once youre behind"

anyways, just played for the first time, started out 2-5 and ended up winning my last 5.... at 1100 whatever that means for me.

Ya- Awice and Will Ma are 2 of the 3 founders (and the 3rd founder played poker seriously for like a month during which he won the Sunday storm and basically never played again)

As far as reynad-complaints this one isn't too bad. He's right that comebacks from clearly lost games don't really happen. I'd say he's wrong in that he's new enough to the game that these positions he wants a comeback in should have involved him resigning several turns earlier and even amongst the best players right now it is still extremely common for someone to lose a game from a won position(similar to being up a piece or 2 pawns in chess when he wants a comeback to occur when opponent has forced mate in 2)

Maybe, but in a very low % of games. We don't know! Certainly the different drones make 1. wild drone and 2. de possible. There also might be playable-ish rushes that start 1. d

The reason is more an aesthetic reason. Besides the simplistic "second player is half a turn ahead of first player", more importantly you can always outrace your opponent to a unit if you want to cut a drone to do so. And you could outrace that if you want to cut 2 drones, etc. By starting the game early enough, it makes it so that both players had equal opportunity to do this, keeping it so that skill decides the game even at ultra high elo, instead of "autoloss."

Regularly- with vivid in play dee is usually right. With wild in play we is usually right for player 2. I'd say player 1 I go dd 90% as player 2 I go dd 75%

What are reasonable lines?

C, B or A first?

I know there is millions of options, if you prefer you can answer for base set only.

I got to 1310, but just do random stuff every time. I would like to have sort of a more solid foundation. Like learning preflop first in poker or whatever.

Also is the any of the +5/8 units that I should be extra aware of? Like is there some that will force a game to be around that, if that makes sense.

The game is designed so that every unit changes the strategies and this is causing maximum diversity, the game doesn't have strong or forcing subsets like in other games where say there is a strong combo A B C and then it doesnt matter if D or E is present.

That being said, apollo warps games considerably. high absorb units do too, etc.

In general picking what units to go for is an expert level decision, until you are an expert there is "luck" if you just guess right or not. For intermediate players, you should think about what units you want to go for and how many drones you'll need to support that strategy.

Typically 3. dda and 2. ... ddc are natural choices for first and second player respectively. There isn't really any sort of "preflop" strategy I could say though. Maybe timex knows more as he is one of the top players.
