Once you're level 5, the first time you visit a gym you will be prompted to pick a team.

To attack an enemy gym: you will get to fight the Pokemon guarding it with a lineup of six of your own. The more you beat the gym, the more prestige (basically gym XP) it will lose. Eventually you take it down to neutral or white gym and you can post your own Pokemon to guard it.

At a gym of your own team: you can train at the gym to raise its prestige. You get to fight with ONE Pokemon and the more you win the more prestige it gets. The more prestige a gym has, the higher its level is. A trainer can post one Pokemon per gym level (but you can only put one Pokemon personally per gym). So if you see a friendly gym, train until it hits the next level and post one of yours there.

In the shop you can see how many gyms you are helping control in the upper right corner. Once per day you can "cash in" by clicking that button, it gives you coins and stardust. The most gyms you can benefit from is 10.

I don't even know what to ask. I literally have no idea what I'm doing. I know a few tips and tricks like the curveballs, but besides that I don't know what I'm supposed to do with all the pokemon I have. Can you skype me? Same name as here

I actually just got to work, so no skype. But basically your initial goal is to level yourself up as much as possible. Catch EVERYTHING, even if it seems like "trash." You can transfer Pokemon to get candies of their type, you use said candies to evolve them. Evolve EVERYTHING because it gives XP for evolving.

So just catch and evolve as much as possible until at least level 10. The higher your level, the higher CP Pokemon you will encounter in the wild.

I wouldn't evolve until you can use a lucky egg for that sweet levelupaments

Lucky eggs are a rare drop from poke stops and I think you get one for leveling every once in awhile. Using one grants you double XP for 30 min. Definitely helpful to evolve a bunch when you're using an egg. But I wouldn't let that deter you from evolving as much as possible, because lucky eggs are few and far between unless you buy them from the store.

Normal eggs can also be found and hatched. Swipe right on your Pokemon page to see them. You need to place an egg into an incubator and then walk the requisite distance to hatch it. Hatching gives XP, stardust, and obviously a Pokemon.

a big part of my commute is crawling through bumper to bumper traffic for like 3 miles

hope that counts as walking for my eggs. would make the commute a lot more tolerable.

Downtown DC is loaded with pokestops. You shouldn't ever run out of supplies.



My most money location so far has been the local shopping center though. Lots of pokestops and populated enough that they were all raining flower petals. I couldn't take a step without seeing 3-4 Pokémon on my radar.

Fave thing to do so far is attrition a strong gym down then leaving (heh) a low level bellsprout to taunt them with his dance.

When you first create your character, if you walk away from the 3 starter Pokemon a pikachu will appear.
