No, don't blindly go replacing your memory. The first problem doesn't sound like a hardware problem at all. First google result: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/...s-waking-sleep

The second one does, but it could still be about anything.

I don't see how general use is worse than it being a boot drive and running the most used applications. Of course it adds up to the workload but if it isn't massive then go for it. Yes, 250 GB would be way too small for me but it might be enough for some needs. Anyways, pretty easy to add a HDD or bigger SSD if necessary later on.

Think that build is missing a hard drive.
Yeah I'll look out for combos when I go to actually buy the parts.

I don't really need a lot of space. Besides the OS my work files are only another ~40 GB.

Newest build:

http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/PHGsgs

Went to an H97 motherboard since they was not much selection of H87s. Upgraded the video card slightly.

I removed the case and power supply because I looked around here and found a brand new Thermaltake Black Widow 850w power supply and a NZXT Phantom case, both new in box. Both are huge overkill but they will work.

I'm not clear on the difference between general use vs. "boot drive and games or other applications." It is extremely unlikely you will notice performance degradation as your drive fills. Maybe if you run some benchmarks? I regularly fill my SSD to the limit and never notice performance drops or changes.

Solid score on the psu. Was gonna say the selected one might be a bit meager

Do you still use a cd/dvd reader?

500 W is more than enough for that build and it has room for expansion as well.

Just go for a reliable, trustworthy one and don't overspend for something that you most likely won't need.

Thanks for the link. I changed the setting for my HDD and will see in the future if that fixes the problem of starting my computer.

I was looking through my system settings and it says I only have 4 GB of "installed memory (RAM)," but I actually have 3 2GB sticks, so for some reason it's not reading one of the RAM sticks anymore.

Do you have 32 bit or 64 bit operating system? 32 bit operating systems can not use more than 4 GB of memory.

It says my System Type is 64-bit Operating System. I'm almost fairly certain that it has said 6GB in the past.

In 2009 someone from 2+2 helped me find the right parts to build my computer.

I've also had issues where sometimes videos or clicking will stick and not work right away. Almost like intermittent freezing for a couple seconds.

No but one is required to install some of the software I need.

Yeah I'll do this, wasn't really thinking, there are probably 4 or 5 old ones here.

Bad news/good news: Reformatting fixed my problem so the burning need for a new computer is gone. Good news is that my boss got scared and is going to go ahead with the upgrade anyway in the next month or so.

But until then I'm stuck using my awesome Intel Core Duo E7400, 2GB RAM, no video card POS computer.

Pull a fan off something. Should break sooner than later.

If he had 32 bit it'd say like 3.xx GB ram, no?

Wtf is this three stick business? Triple channel ram?

Alternate taking one out and see how they register imo. Sometimes simply swapping seats can fix weird issues like this.

And buy two goddamn sticks of 4gb dual channel memory and quit this three stick nonsense.

Like I said, someone from 2+2 helped me back in 2009. It was the first time I ever built my own computer. It has served me pretty well for 5.5 years now.

But, good idea. When I get back later I will try swapping the RAM around and see what happens.

Triple channel nonsense was the **** in 2009 so it's actually preferable in that system most likely.

I manually installed SP3 and that's about all I can do. Windows Update doesn't work.

or maybe new computer after all

Actually it appears you can still download all the previous updates. Using Windows Update doesn't work but if you change your settings to "Notify me about updates but let me choose to download and install them" from "Automatically update" it will find all the old updates. I selected the "notify" option when I reinstalled winxp but maybe installing SP3 set it back to Automatic.

EDIT: Or who knows. It found the first update for Windows Update itself but after 5 mins its still 0% done the 477kb file.

but I get to order the parts for my new computer on Monday. The cost of the software upgrade for the program I use costs more then the new computer ($960 vs. $850). Plus the software company gets to soak us for a special $120 cable.

Just finished this. There was a ton of dust inside the tower so I spent a good hour working on cleaning it up as much as I could. I shifted the RAM down one slot each and now it says I have 6.00GB of RAM. It also booted up on the first try after having shut it down and completely unplugging everything so I could work on it.

Some things still feel a little sluggish and sticky, but I'll keep an eye on it for now and see what happens over the next couple days.

Thanks to both of you guys for helping me.

So possibly a bad memory slot

In the event that it is a bad memory slot and not the RAM itself, is the only fix getting a completely new motherboard?

And if it was a bad slot, wouldn't I still only be at 4GB?

I assume you have four ram slots and are currently using one new slot and two that were previously used. Is that the case?

If the slot is bad, yeah, probably not much you can do but replace the board. Or if you need more ram, buy bigger sticks.

He actually might have six. Triple channel memory and all.

If it works currently, don't fix it though. It's quite likely that it will do something similar in the future.
