Post script to my graphics issues:

Moved the card to the second gfx card slot and haven't had a crash yet.

However, I've also only been playing games strictly in 32-bit mode.

I'm not entirely clear on how drivers work and crash wrt on-card and other memory, but could there be something to the 32-bit setting that's preventing crashes? Does that make sense?

Not on the hardware level AFAIK. If 64 bit is at fault, it's probably a driver issue.

Card only has 1-2gb ram anyhow, so I guess it's not like it'd be an above 4gb issue

Should finish my build tonight and try to turn that baby on.

It'll be first time for monitor etc as well. Any tips or advice or should it all be pretty straight forward to set up?

Should be straight forward. Read manuals, make sure you're plugging the right things in the right places.

And don't get discouraged the first time you hit the power button and nothing happens. Even the best builders go absent minded and forget something now and then. It's an electronic device, so start your troubleshooting at the wall power receptacle.

Is the outlet active? Is the power cord plugged in on both ends? Is the power supply switched to On? Is the power supply connected to the motherboard? Is the case's power button connected plugged into the right spot on the motherboard?

The only problem I had was the IO plate and those ****ing prongs. I eventually just bent them a bit more than recommended to get a good fit, but many profanities dropped with that step. Just ground yourself and you'll be fine.

Err just remembered, I did get hung up a bit on the connections with the PSU but eventually figured it out.

Yeah I have everything done except for PSU and connecting stuff.

The IO Shield/motherboard has bothered me the most so far as well. Was a pain in the ass

Do you have a laptop with a webcam or something that you can stream the build? If so, I can watch and help point out what you're doing right/wrong if you'd like. Also, there are several resources on youtube that will help you.

Once you're done the setup, I would highly suggest you follow this guide:

Haha that ****ing IO plate took me so much time too. That, and the CPU; I always **** my pants when I have to apply some force to clamp it in. ****ing 300$ square that looks like it could break by sneezing on it

Remember to put the IO plate in from inside the case, don't try shoving it in from outside :0

Two questions:

I have two built in fans on my case, and one CHAFAN spot on the motherboard that I can find.. how do I connect the second fan?

What pins should be unused on my motherboard? I have all the media connections made, but all the USB stuff is empty, I feel like I'm forgetting something...

After reviewing and such I feel confident I have everything plugged and they are just extra pins.

The fan is still the last question remaining. I'm hoping I find I can plug it in somewhere so I don't have to go buy a splitter of some sort.

USB pins are for USB slots on your case that aren't your motherboard. Like on the front or top.

Just look for a spot that fits it. Should be on your motherboard manual too. If you post what MB you have I can tell you where it is.

Some fans have connectors that go straight to the PSU instead as well.

I'm using:

Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case

ASRock H97M Anniversary Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard

The only fans are the two built into the case. One plugged into CHAFAN slot, other is currently unplugged

The USB I figured out, but there are like those extra USB 2.0 and 3.0 or whatever slots on the motherboard unused. I do have the cord that was in the case plugged into the motherboard.

Looking at the pics on http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157547 it seems like that motherboard only has one chassis fan header
you could get one of these things to connect it to the psu

Those are just for if you want to connect extra usb ports

Empty motherboard connectors is no big deal. Non-plugged in wires means you're losing functionality. Usually on the case, as has been mentioned.

If the fan in question doesn't already have the splitter pictured above, yeah, you'll have to buy a splitter. They're super cheap though so I'd recommend it.

Alright so I fixed the fan problem.

I think I got all the connections etc. done, started the computer and it boots, the fans run, mouse lights up, etc. but I have a new issue:

The monitor turns on, but says No VGA Signal. I've tried DVI and HDMI as well, all no signal. What gives?

Do you have power running to the GPU? There's usually two 6pin connectors on the bigger cards these days that need to be connected to the PSU.

GPU fans are spinning so I am assuming that means theirs power.

I have my laptop connected to monitor via HDMI now so no issues there.

Connected DVI straight to GPU (maybe I was supposed to do that from the start) and we got action via DVI!
PC Gaming hardware discussion Quote

yeah, you're always supposed to plug the monitor directly into the GPU otherwise your're just using your cpu's graphics capabilities which it might not even have

yeah it was plugged into the mobo.

so now working through the bios and a couple issues:

try to 'save and exit' and it just brings me back to the utility screen i was on

and

put in OS CD, i can hear it spin but nothing happens - is this due to still being on utility screen?

one thing I did notice and I think this is the problem: nothing is detected in my SATA drives/devices in the bios

Figured it out. Very noobie mistake.

I connected the SATA stuff (optical drive/SSD) to the power supply, but not to the mobo
