Yeah. The sixfour is assuming a game run at max resolution with max details all set on high. 300 seems pretty standard for CS:GO. I'll test my settings when I get home (but I think I spent like 2.5+ on my setup)

CS:GO is basically CS:S which is basically CS which is a 15 year old game. 300 fps should be entirely doable. Whether it is necessary is another debate.

what is the benefit of 300 fps versus, say, 120fps?

It's a lot smoother. If you have a 144hz monitor, 120fps will be janky not to mention fps drops will murder you in a competitive fps. This is as someone who gets 100fps in CS:go which is pretty obvious it's not good.

I should have mentioned I'm not planning to play in 1080. I would prefer the performance boost rather than high settings.

750ti is a good choice if you don't plan on playing demanding games like crysis or bf4. You don't need two SSDs or 16GB ram. Everything else looks solid.

Good LCD monitors that display 120+ hz is going to cost at least 300. That leaves ~800 for your build.

Anyone have a good article on hand explaining the link between fps and monitor refresh rate in Hz? I always feel like a noob looking at monitor specs with the ms refresh rate and what the Hz measurement actually means, or between IPS and TN LCD.

Hz is just the amount the monitor refreshes itself a second. If your fps is below that, the monitor will repeat frames, reducing performance and looking laggier.

refresh rate is how often the screen "flickers" per second as actions occur, thus a higher refresh rate means that you see things a lot clearer. Similar to how DPI works (dots per inch). The more that can fit into an area, the less pixilated everything looks. Regards IPS vs TN, IPS has a broader range of colors that are displayed and they look better from different angles (less color distortion), however they have been unable to make an IPS monitor that has low MS (response time).

Hope I covered everything

You did not explain the link between GPU FPS and refresh rate and what the hz numbers actually means. You also didn't eplain the ms delay he asked about. One could also argue that a high refresh rate does not mean a clearer picture at all, because screens don't flicker anymore, unless you game on a CRT. You can also have a perfectly clear picture while getting 1 FPS from the GPU.

So no, you did not explain everything.

This is also only partially true, case in point 30FPS at 60hz o 24FPS and 120hz.

Update, I did indeed give this a try. Went with the second most recent nvidia drivers. Have tried a variety of raids, from 25 man, to anything between 10-30.

So far, no crashes at all.

I am going to assume this is all due to my driver tweaking. Blizzard has put it a lot of changes on a recent large patch, as well as a number of small changes in minor patches since then (the 14th). But I have no reason to believe they were fixing things for people who were having lockups.

So, for anyone with a 750ti, if you're having blue screens: downgrade them drivers!

Maybe mistakes were made, but we'll see

Is the 970 so much better that I should take back the 780?

pretty sure 780 > 970, but you should just get 2 EVGA 980s classified. They're awesome:

So I have a ~ month old MSI r9 290X, and yesterday all of a sudden my screen went from normal to looking like this:

For reference, here's a link to the MSI page about this card: http://us.msi.com/product/vga/R9_290...#hero-overview

And here's what it actually looks like:

So basically, blue hue to everything, lots of blacks appear sort of neon green, other colors also appear neon green, there's sometimes some flicker, and the hue kind of changes from time time (in terms of richness of the blue).

I've tried re-attaching the DVI cable with no success. It's not the monitor, which looks perfectly fine with my PS4. I will shortly try attaching the card via HDMI to see if I can isolate the card, but here's my question:

Am I right that this looks like a failing video card?

EDIT: HDMI also screwed up.

hoya,

tried updating or removing and reinstalling drivers?

other than that, yeah, sounds like maybe it is dying.

wrt my prior issue,

computer is officially blue screening while idling at the desktop now. Still using the old graphics drivers. Wonder if it's still under warranty or anything.

Yeah I rolled back drivers, reinstalled newest, etc.

What was interesting was it was fine, I booted Heroes of the Storm TECHNICAL ALPHA, got about 2 minutes into the tutorial and Diablo did some sort of "move" and the screen faded to blue/neon green really strangely. For like 5 seconds I figured that was some weird effect, and then I was like ". . . nahhhh, that seems more like something bad just happened."

Restarted and yeah.

THANKS OBAMA

Similar story here:
I was reading on reddit that a guy was complaining about Path of Exile killing his video card because of the fps heavy builds. I chuckled.

I was playing PoE and I was grouping with a fps heavy build. Drivers crashed and I died. Drivers recovered and I was dead, even though I quit immediately when my screen froze.
