finally got all of my parts, except storage. ended up with msi 1080 ti gaming x, pretty tough to find stock at newegg. was in stock for like 5 minutes this afternoon and i grabbed it. they had it all day yesterday, was kicking myself i didn't pull the trigger thinking i'd miss the free destiny 2 or the price would go back up to gouge levels, but it all worked out.

only thing i need now is storage, i can't decide what to do there. i think ultimately i'll want a 1tb nvme drive + an hdd for storage. but 960 evo 1tb is just not a good value right now considering the minor benefit nvme provides. i nearly got the 500gb 960 evo, but decided against, i'm just gonna get the cheapest 1tb ssd i can find for now, and pick up a 1tb m.2 whenever i think they're worth it and change this ssd to data storage. or something.

The **** much storage do you need?

Hehe, I am running a ****ty goodwill computer for the moment, it uses 100gb basically for Win10 and a few steam games. I suspect it would run well with Win7 but unfort 10 is way bloated atm. 1tb hard drive won't seem to ridiculous in a few years. 1tb ssd for a home gaming pc gives me chills.

My 4 year old beast seems to have suffered motherboard failure, but I am not super knowledgeable on hardware so I am not 100% sure. Tried replacing the power supply and no dice, powersupply blinks and hard shuts down after trying to initialize (both the old and replacement one).

Would like to get a decent $500ish replacement but not in a big hurry as long as this one plays the doto on 1280x800 lmao. It couldn't handle 1920x1200 unlike my last rig,l which was just using the onboard with Win7.

GL buying graphics cards right now if it isn't a 1080/1080ti. The mining boom is skyrocketing sales. It's leaked from all AMD cards over to the 1060s/1070s.

RX 480 8gb card that could be had for $200 three months ago are selling for over $400 second hand.

i have <1tb of pictures, documents, etc that can be on an hdd. 500gb for stuff i'd want on an ssd is plenty for now, but i figure within a couple years i'd be able to fill it up with programs, games, and other random stuff. especially b/c 500gb is really 465 and you want to leave 10% empty, so we're almost at 400gb actual space, then probably another 100gb is OS, office, antivirus, photoshop, random desktop crap, etc. i mean obviously it is a good amount of space, i'm pretty close to 50/50 on whether i should've gotten it. but cost/value (500gb nvme is 220, 1tb ssd is 250, nvme's and ssd's in general are expensive right now but should drop by a year from now) and having only one m.2 slot swung me away from it.

Crypto currencies. Bitcoin. GPUs are used to solve complex equations and in return are given portions of those currencies. The rates on certain ones has skyrocketed recently. Properly tuned GPUs can bring in $3-6+ a day. Have 20 of them running 24 hours a day 7 days a week, well, you can do the math and see why it makes sense. People are buying piles of them as they pay themselves off in a month or so and then it's pure profit - electricity from then on.

Are there mobos made specifically for mining with 10+ cards or do people just build a bunch of super cheap machines?
PC Gaming hardware discussion Quote

There are mobos that are good for it, 6-7 gpus is more usual than 10.

Check out: https://www.reddit.com/r/EtherMining/wiki/index for some info, tho at this point (for Ethereum at least) it's likely too late to jump in and make decent returns, and if not that time is very fast approaching. Tho who's to say what/when the next big breakout coin will be.

If you're not dropping tens of millions on cloud-based distributed mining operations, you're wasting your money.

I realize that you're trolling, but it's a good passive income. Def beats selling WoW gold

2k can basically get you high end of everything.

If you don't have monitors, you could probably get a 144hz 27" monitor to go with it, as your gaming monitor, and maybe only spend like $1300-1400 on your tower.

As far as suggestions:

Get the newest I5, I7 if you want hyperthreading, which isn't used for gaming atm.
16 GB RAM - 2100+ mhz
500gb SSD
1+tb HDD (if you want more storage)

geforce 1080 TI

I mean, then you're basically set. You could get crazy and get 2, and go cheaper on the SSD and CPU, but no real reason to get 2.

Yeah get either at 1080 or 1080ti as they come with destiny 2 for free right now.

And agree for 27" monitor, MG287q imo.

MG287q is FreeSync, so that seems like a bad combo.

Wtf is a bit coin mining. I know what sha256 is, blockchain and I'm still scratching my head saying wtf. Basically there are only so many difficult to guess hashes left and so gpus around the world have been set loose trying to catch them all? How can <insert random graphics card here> do this better than a mainframe?

For 27in monitor with a 1080ti Def go with a 1440p gsync monitor.

This monitor is incredible once you have the right color profiles set. $450 right now.. Pretty solid price

With the prices of GPUs, the only thing that makes sense right now is 1080/1080tis. Everything else is to scarce and overpriced

haha yep it's a bonkers market. Best value for money is the top end nvidia
