Was browsing the list of video game consoles on wikipedia when I came across this new system slated for release in March of 2013. Looks promising actually.
They had a kickstarter campaign and were able to raise $8.5 million!!.
Here's the wikipedia article on it:
- Prototype runs on Android 4.0
- $99 launch price
- Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy III would be a launch title
- XBMC partnered with the Ouya to bring XBMC to the system
- Namco Bandai is on board to release games for the system
- Will feature a store similar to those on Xbox and PS3 to buy games online
- Will include Twitch TV app
- Access to OnLive video game streaming service
- Will be able to root the system WITHOUT voiding the warranty
- Requires only a screwdriver to be opened to allow for modding and possible add-ons
- Can be used as development kits, allowing anyone to be a developer without licensing fees
- Specs:
- Nvidia Tegra 3 (T33) SoC
- Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU
- Nvidia ULP GeForce GPU
- 1 GB RAM
- 8 GB of internal flash storage
- HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
- Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
- Bluetooth LE 4.0
- Ethernet port
- One USB 2.0
- Wireless controller sporting two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button, and 3" touchpad
- Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich"
Wow is all I have to say. Even if there's not much in terms of support from game companies right away, which the Ouya seems to be garnering, the fact that it's open-sourced and ANYONE can develop games for it make it look very promising. Plus the specs on this thing and the potential that it can create all for only $99?!?! Looks like the WiiU might have some serious competition. I still can't believe they raised $8.5 million in one month!!
