***Official Quake Live anticipation thread (Q3A based FPS-game)***

I heard yesterday that the greatest FPS game of all time, Quake 3, is about to be resurrected in form of Quake Live. It is basically Quake 3 which works solely on your web browser and it will be totally free. The interface should also have a game browser, so that it matches up players with equal skill level.

For what it seems, this was the reason why Quake3's 1-on-1 scene died - the lack of system which gets players together. Waiting 20 minutes on empty server and then getting beat 17-1 by an oldskool pro didn't seem to tempting for new comers to the game.

Live long and prosper. \o/

meh, this is disappointing. id are known for being revolutionary, not rehashing old stuff. if you're gonna do this project, do it with quakeworld. q3 blows. blahhhh.

Well it's not like this is id's only project atm. I'm pretty hyped to try this out. I played a ton of RA3 and a little 1v1 and CTF years ago. Still the best movement physics of any FPS imo.

4 vs 4 Team Deathmatch/CTF so that you can do arranged team matches and game browser seeks out another team. Best lan party game ever.

GONNA BE AWESOME!
And bring it with CPMA physics, not vanilla Quake.

I don't want to derail this thread, but did you ever play RA2? First off vanilla Q2 and vanilla Q3 sucked (comparatively). RA was where it was at. RA3 was weak compared to RA2, though to some degree this was a function of the base game.

Take 1v1 maps for instance. Q2 -- starts off rail then either rail or brawl. Q3 = lightning charge. Whoever thought the lightning gun was a good idea was a downie. The chaingun was the perfect DOT weapon.

alright, well opinions differ I guess. You would at least agree that the LG was overall -EV in terms of lowering the bar skillwise, right?

To think otherwise is as blasphemous as acceptance of the railgun hum in Q3

i haven't touched q3 in years but i really don't remember the lg being overpowering at all? i mean it was pretty powerful yes, but it has a shortish range, and you still have to go and pick it up before dying.

who really cares about 'weapon balance' anyway. the rl in qw is insanely powerful, yet the game is still awesome with just about the steepest learning curve there is.

I remember when Q3 was THE benchmark for testing video cards and computers. Now it runs in a browser. Technology is great.

The LG would melt face, literally and figuratively. No spin up time like the chaingun. In RA you start with all weapons, so everyone had it all the time with reasonable ammo. The range issue was negated in 1v1 where you started close to the other dude. It basically ruined RA 1v1 imo. Also, it pretty much ruined mid to close range rocket fights in regular RA as you would be a fool to use anything but the LG at that range. That was an enjoyable part of Q2.

I don't know what level players you faced with the LG, that is somewhat important. While I do believe it lowered the bar skillwise (overall), it took some skill to become adept with it. Once that happened however, it was the fastest way to kill. Fatality, or someone very very good pretending to be Fatality, was completely destroying everyone in 1v1 using just LG back in the day. Yes, he would have owned me with rail but it wouldn't have been a complete joke.

Re: ***Official Quake Live anticipation thread (Q3A based FPS-game)***

there is an LG in the original quake which is at least as powerful as its q3 counterpart. doesn't spoil the game though.

i mean RA is just a mod, it has never been used in any serious tournaments right? it's just basically 'who has the best aim?', not 'who is the best player?'. this is quake, not COD4, there's always gonna be one weapon which generally dominates.

you can't hate the lg just because it ruined rocket arena.

RA was a team game so it wasn't just aim, there were tactics involved. It lacks the 'powerup' management of vanilla, yes. Not to sound dismissive of that, as it certainly requires skill.

I don't think that the something like the PGL ever ran any tournys with RA, but top notch players occasionaly played. Rumors of Thresh and Fatality (who I may have played 75/25), etc. Many people were anon so you didn't know. Who wants to play under their clan name and get owned by MyPrettyPony (who is talking ****) and recording.

In non 1v1 play rail is the dominant weapon in q2 and q3 (never really played much 1). Health/Armor in RA was 200 which is 2 shots. I don't mind a weapon dominating as long as it isn't easy mode which the LG is imo compared to rocket/rail. Rocket/Rail arena (or even RailArena) would be perfect.

This begs the question, will they have Quake Live RA?
