Re: official football manager 2010 hype thread imo
Im finding it really hard, finished 19th last season. But some 25+ points off relegation.
I feel like my squad is as good as anyones in this league. The fintess thing is killing me. Ive got fitness coaches now too.
Sometimes there is a game on a saturday, and then a monday. With 1 fkn day of rest. Then no game until the next saturday, so why not make that monday game to a tuesday or wednesday game?

One of the many things is that in league 2, is a semi-professional league. So they jam pack 48 games into a 38 game season. You'll end up playing something like 60 or so if you go far in cup runs. 60 games isn't even what players from Man Utd and Barcelona play even with big cup runs AND international duty.

Re: official football manager 2010 hype thread imo
In my 3rd season in the champ with Sutton united now, finished 7th last season after a awful start which had me worrying about relegation.
Hopefully can push for promotion this season despite having to sell my best CM but at least i got 4mill for him, which was very much needed as my capacity atm is around 7,000 (was all last season as well while new stadium built). New stadium was supposed to be ready for start of this season but now is delayed until at least feb and is only gunna be like 15k when finished lol.
Current wage budget is still only 72k per week and thats with pretty much always adjusting the budget to give me next to no money to spend on players and grabbing people on freebies or super cheap.
Picked up a young ST on a three year deal for free in summer though and hes banged in 14 in his first 8 and looks pretty awesome and already worth over 2mill.

Hey I'm in League 1 too, can you give me a run down of who you have on your team? Maybe I can get some tips for the next transfer window.
Right now I'm only recruiting people that I can field, no youth prospects for me because I feel I can't afford them in the wage budget. I don't know if that's the right approach or not.

Reason: Also I don't know how you play so fast, I have 30 hours in and I just hit September of the first year. :/

Fitness is a big problem, you'll need to rotate hard and I find to have a big squad and stay in budget you need at least 4 loan signings even if they're not that good.

Re: official football manager 2010 hype thread imo
I tend to buy young players.
Basically pre season takes me almost as long to play as the season itself. I get scout reports on just about anyone I feel may be half decent. Any time a club releases players, I scout them.
I have found that for some reason there are a ton of young really good Irish players in the game. No idea why this is but every summer I always find 3-4 real gems, and they always seem to be Irish.
The reason the game doesnt take me as long as others to play is because I dont pay much attention to detail in the season if its blatantly obvious I am not going to threaten promotion or relegation. As said above, I spend more time on the game pre season, getting my squad balance correct, than I do playing the season out, especially if its evident at any stage that its going to be a nothing season.
If I am playing for potential promotion/avoiding relegation though, I slow things down and put more thought into decision making.
FYI, I dont sign a player unless my scouts give him the full 5 stars. Ive learnt quickly that signing a 3-4* player is often a waste, because you can near guarantee if you are scouting enough, that your scouts will find a 5* alternative and you have then wasted those wages on another not so good player.
Unless its coming close to the start of the season and say the RB spot is weak in the squad. Then I will just go out and sign the best one available.
With no transfer fees involved 99% of the time, I feel like its made things much easier for me. I am basically rebuilding the squad each summer. If I dont want someone I can just offload him for 0 and not worry about losing money on him. Only this last summer did I stick to the nucleus of the squad and just add some real quality. Im top of League 1 now with 17 wins and 2 draws from 19 games! Ive beaten 2 championship sides en route to the League cup 3rd round where I drew 2-2 with Aston Villa, they scored 3 very quick goals in the 2nd half of extra time, we managed a late consolation to lose 5-3, but I get the feeling that the championship isnt going to be too difficult for this bunch of players. I dont think I am going to have to make too many changes for the next 4-5 seasons. This squad I have now would stand a good chance of premier league survival IMO.

Yea this...
At first I literally took the approach that I would only need a tiny squad and would pretty much never have to rotate. The first season was so hard because I didnt realise how wrong this was until after the window shut.
I ended up with promotion via the playoffs but I genuinely think if I had known this, I would have won the league.

Re: official football manager 2010 hype thread imo
I'm probably doing a lot of things wrong then. In League 1 I pretty much have just focused on signing the starting players and then trying to get a selection of 5 subs that are versatile enough to play a few positions each so we have decent coverage when we need to sub players out of the game.
The 5 star player signing sounds pretty good on paper but do you find you have enough budget to do it in practice? Most of the players I scouted at 5 star refused to even enter talks with me as Colchester and the others were out of my budget range (max $4.1k/week wage allowance). I did end up with one 5 star player signed and one other on loan I believe.
In this game I'm also particularly frustrated by the boards lack of willingness to expand my scouting range.

Re: official football manager 2010 hype thread imo
I pretty much only sign players that are unattached. It takes ages to scroll through all the free transfers.
Unattached players accept lower wages.
I just won League 1 with ease. At 29 games I had won 26 and drawn 3, until I lost my 30th game.
Got everyone all over my players though. My board jumped in and accepted £1.4m for my star RW. Which is a ****ing joke because IYAM hes capable of becoming a £20m footballer!(I may be biased but we will see)... Anyway he refused to leave which was nice.
Really happy with my squad going into the Championship, although my star CB was refusing to sign a new deal last season so I took the 210k that I could get for him. We have decent defenders but he was the best at the club. Best is, he signed for Swansea, who were below me in the league but fighting for Promotion also, they missed out.

Re: official football manager 2010 hype thread imo
A pretty good trick when your in the lower leagues is to pick up the scouts who work on a rolling contract, have a look at the initial report then fire them and it only costs like a months wages or w/e. Once your higher up none seem to sign on rolling deals though.
Going from Blue Square South to the Champ i probably spent <50k or 100k on transfers total.
After two years in the Champ its upto 1.9mill spent total (im just about to enter 2022) and i've recouped like 9.5mill.
I also mainly aim for younger players who are available on free's just dont get a brazilian scout as it will tilt you seeing lots of amazing players for free who want to join you only to have work permits denied lol.
Ireland seems to produce good youngsters who are easy to get, and i also like scandi countries, Picked up two midfielders who were great for free last year. Had to sell one this summer for 4million but the other is still playing for me and he is on a £325 a week 3 year deal

Re: official football manager 2010 hype thread imo
Yea I would def make contracts longer for players you are CERTAIN you want to keep hold of. This re-negotiating every 12 months is expensive. Also 95% of the time if you dont want a player, and hes worth very little, offer him to clubs for free and he will go. So a longer contract is very little risk.
I am yet to pay a transfer fee for a player and I feel like Ive got a very very good chance of getting into the Prem this season(about to kick off).

Re: official football manager 2010 hype thread imo
5 games into Championship. I wont be getting anywhere near promotion, lol
Doing ok so far, not terrible, but its very obvious Im not dominating any of the matches. Im confident I can avoid relegation though.
1 win, 1 loss and 3 draws so far. The defeat was a 3-0 thumping at home to Brighton though.

Re: official football manager 2010 hype thread imo
That was my experience when I got promoted to Championship in FM2011. My team just didn't have anywhere near a comparable wage budget to compete and I eventually lost interest.
