Tyranny

I just bought this and am downloading it. Will post a mini review after I've played it a bit.

I've got it too. Only had time to play ~10min last night, which was mostly spent on character creation and their starting 'conquest' mini game thing, which decides your history, and how factions react to you.

I'm not a massive fan of the 3D-y cartoon graphics, but I'm sure they'll grow on me.

I am getting my ass kicked early on, just on hard.

About an hour in, seems decent but a bit of a tired rehashing of dnd storytelling. I'm finding I want to like these new CRPG games a lot more than I do once I've played them.

Unfortunately BG2 and PC: Torment still GOAT.

It's annoying me so far. It keeps wanting me to make choices on whether to support the Disfavoured or the Scarlet Chorus. I don't give a ****. Beyond the briefest of introductions I have no idea who they are. Why should I care?

I think it's a problem for the storytelling to throw you in there as someone who is already powerful. Typically in these things you start off as some clueless grunt and work your way up. Besides arc, the point of this is to introduce you to the world via a protagonist who knows nearly as little about it as you do.

Edit: Also the humorlessness (so far, anyway) is a problem for me. Compare with BG2, Minsc etc. This is all eye-rollingly SERIOUS and DARK. I actually have free time right now where I could play some more and I kind of don't want to.

Yeh they've gone rather overboard with the whole choice aspect of the game.

As it's often hard to actually tell what dialogue will do what with different people, I'm just 'cheating' by having the 'Show Reputation' option on, so I can see the potential effect of each choice, then pick the ones that work towards the bonus skills I want.

Yeah that's how it feels, that I'm just clicking buttons to make abstract numbers go up and down to achieve some end. Like Pillars of Eternity wasn't a great game but in that, the first time House Doemenel approached me, they were huge dicks and tried to boss me around. So I slaughtered them all on sight for the rest of the game. That's roleplaying. Being all ZOMG WHO WOULD YOU LIKE THE HIGHER REPUTATION SCORE WITH is like... I don't care? I should care based on the story and then ideally the game mechanics should reflect that. I shouldn't have to care because the game mechanics say I have to care. If I had to pick one, I'd rather a story-based choice that has no effect on the game progression rather than a choice that matters for game progression but is poorly plotted.

I didn't really do any researching/min-maxing, so possible it's just a ****ty build by me.

Bump.

Couldn't get into the game when it first came out but just gave it another go.

Really started enjoying it this time round, until suddenly - it's over and I'm scrolling through the credits.

The ending felt really rushed. Aside from quests, I still hadn't done quite a bit of the stuff available, then it was bish-bash-bosh, a few boss fights in a row, and that's it. Very disappointing.

Seems they had a lot of nice ideas, just were lacking the scope Pillars had.

I think I literally played it once, heh. Maybe twice. What made you start enjoying it?

Firstly, actually playing more! But generally just RPG-y stuff I like - getting interesting weapons/skills, building a character, and getting stronger.

When I completed it I only had 4/5 of the spires, had only unlocked 2/5 edicts, hadn't gone/couldn't go to at least a couple of places on the map, and felt I'd barely got started on forging/researching. As a minor completionist, it kind of rubbed me the wrong way, especially as I'm not too keen on replaying games a ton.

I think the last Act must have only taken me like 15min as, unless I was missing something, there was nothing else to do story wise.
