If you just want to play the games then the best option is a pi. Retron 5 is garbage.

You must have robot hands if that's your favorite controller.

Confirmed bot

It's lightweight and I don't have large hands so it fits well.

Most of the included NES Classic games are made by Nintendo (Mario, Zelda, etc), but I wonder what it cost them to license the others (Tecmo Bowl, anything by Konami, etc)? Wild guess - but perhaps that's a reason for the short supply?

From what I've read, we only know that Nintendo is discontinuing the NES for 2017 - so maybe they have plans to bring it back next year?

Friend had a take that margins on digital software are like near infinite whereas margins on pieces of hardware are thin, so NES Classic is cannibalizing Virtual Console sales. This doesn't hold up when you think about it though, because they're largely different audiences (NES Classic seems to often go to 40 year old dudes who haven't touched a console in 25 years and/or only Xbox/PS4, plus gifts, plus people who like the hardware nostalgia) and nobody has a system hooked up at this time where they can buy VC games.

Plus you can't just buy digital games as Christmas gifts

From what I'm reading about switch sales, a lot of 40 somethings are buying it as the perfect adult portable console.

Had my first full system freeze - docked or not, no buttons elicited a response. Hard reset worked fine, though. What was odd is that I wasn't even coming out of sleep mode. Ah well. Frankly I expect systems to glitch from time to time, as long as there's a reliable fix I'm not too concerned.

I've been told this one is the nuts if you want to bump higher to 200 gb.

They both seem like good prices.

The only possible explanation for the NES Classic being discontinued

1. They are somehow worried that it will interfere with the Switch market, which seems stupid as hell

2. More likely they realize they underpriced it and they can't exactly jack up the price now.

Given I think it's #2, I'd expect them to retool it somewhat and rerelease it at a much higher price point, they'll add another 5 games or so, call is the Classic Edition Pro and charge $100 for it.

The Wonder Boy remake looks beautiful and is getting good reviews. I was buying it anyway because nostalgia.

The re-releasing of the Classic at a higher price point would be (somewhat) consistent with how they've handled the lifespan of the 3DS. That system was released in 2011, but it still costs $200 in 2017 (same price as release day, I think), except now the system isn't simply the 3DS; it's gone from 3DS -> New 3DS -> New 3DS XL.

I've got some pretty sweet Zelda socks and a Link hat with ears, but not a scarf. I've never been much of a scarf person.
