If any Souls fans are looking for something to play while waiting for DS3, Salt and Sanctuary was just announced for 3/15. It's only on PS4 for now, unfortunately. It's coming to PC and Vita (cross-buy) later. It's a 2D platformer Souls-like from the people who made The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile and Charlie Murder. 20+ areas and bosses, 600+ items, co-op, going to have a wiki on fextralife, etc.
Seeing some very positive early impressions. From someone with a review copy:
I will write my impressions later but for now: I have Far Cry Primal, Hitman and Division sitting on my PS4' s HDD and i am playing this. I am a huge fan of Hitman and I even haven't even checked it for five minutes (which unlocked an hour ago or so for me) because i cannot stop playing this.
It is awesome that we will be playing 2 Souls game this year. Okay, i was just gonna tell how awesome it is and go back to playing it but a few notes:
+Combat feels awesome. It is weighty, slow and tactical.
+ Art Design is superb. Reminds me of both Souls series and the Darkest Dungeon.
+ Performance is awesome so far.*
+ World feels huge. I didn't expect this. Seriously.
The Point is, it is awesome. It is just pure awesomeness. If FROM, mighty Miyazaki were to make a 2D souls game, it would have been this.
Loving it so far. Fans of Souls games will feel right at home and pick up on things quickly (inventory system, combat, upgrading, levels, etc)
There is a HUGE skill tree that you use to customize your player's abilities. It's a bit overwhelming but when you look closer, it's very similar to leveling up in Souls, just a different look.
You can jump and grab ledges which feels great. Early on, enemies can be dispatched easily by button mashing. The game doesn't wait too long to throw more powerful enemies your way that require patience and strategy. I've died a few times in the first couple areas and permanently lost a bunch of salt (souls) after dying a second time before retrieving it.
Can't wait to dive further in tomorrow.
Souls fans should absolutely pick this up. Non souls fans should consider giving it a try as it is reasonably priced at about $15 and is looking like a great gaming experience so far.
This is on vita now. It is v good version ime so far. My only gripe is having to use touchscreen but I honestly don't find it that bad once you get used to it.
