My work machine is a no robust simply cannot play the game on anything but short using the default textures. Even then at times it's too frustrating. I'm not sure how much of this is that we have a server with a ton of stuff on it.

My home machine is ok, I play with a 64 bit texture pack, but I can't play on Far.

Part of it is that I've built a GIANT building, and just being near it lags the game pretty hard. Being in it is almost a non-starter.

I thought I was making a cool watch tower with some lava at the top, but didn't realize I hadn't placed one block of glass, so when I dumped 4 bucks of lava into it they destroyed the tower (the rest was wood) and now I have a massive lava flow that looks kinda awesome. (there's a flow the same size behind the stone tower you can't see)

In terms of scope- the larger building is at the max possible height. It's the biggest single building on the server and it feels like it took years to make (it started out as a cliff that I hollowed out and then build up on)

How many hours do you have invested in building that building? And what is the end result? Just that you build something cool?

I'm asking as a person who kind of knows what Minecraft is but has never played. Honest question.

Lasts longer than Legos.

Man seeing dids' post makes me want to start a new world. I made a pretty big compound myself, but it doesn't compare to that one.

That must have taken a long time.

Are the rooms and everything inside that building? It looks like the guy is 1 story tall in the picture.

The guy always looks way bigger than he actually is when you use that program to take a screen shot

There aren't rooms in the building. It's all big open floors. I've considered going in and filling them in, but it lags so hard that it's not really worth it when there's other fun stuff to build outside.

The end result is pretty much just that I built something cool. I can't really explain fully why I enjoy it so much, but I really do.

I don't have a good estimate on how long it took, but like... a while. It's much faster to build the top parts, when you're hollowing out a mountain it can take forever.

I just accidentally kicked the power strip under the desk of the guy that was running our server- and it may be ****ed, so hopefully my guy can get it back up or I'll have to cry. We'll be able to back up from somewhere, but I might lose that lava tower and a ****ton of mining I did last night. (or he's just ****ing with me and the server is fine but he wants to see me sweat).

I find there is an almost zen-like meditative quality to "working" in minecraft. Whether it's building something or just clearing out an area - it's relaxing, it's rewarding and it's fun.

And I only play single player - and it doesn't matter at all that I can't show off my creations in-game or that what I spend countless hours on won't really matter to me or anyone else in my life in 6 months time. I can say the same about playing any game, watching a movie or even listening to music - it's not about an end result, it's about enjoying the journey.

Yes yes...Minecraft is the digital equivalent of a Japanese rock garden...I'd agree with that.

...aaaaaand now I feel like playing again.

YAY. Server lives with no obvious bad consequences.

Starting playing on another friend's just in case- literally found a nice hole in the wall to start way away from the spawn point, along the way grabbed some wood and wool to make a bed so I could set my own spawn, did that and some other stuff- drowned myself just to get some health back and re-spawn.... and he hadn't updated the server so I was back to square one. So much aids.

But thankfully AIDS that will exist in another world I'll probably never visit.

Lol. Love that you used the qualifier "probably".

If you go to http://www.minecraftforum.net/ there's all kinds of people pimping servers. I'd look there.

I found one that my fiance's brother uses. It's really a daunting task to start building in a server where they already have so much badass stuff. Such a fun game though.

Here's another demo video showing everything it can do including a self repairing bridge. There's probably more that hasn't been discovered yet.

My new project.

Some of you are going to know what this is, and some won't. To those that do- stay strong.

I've never played with redstone before, but I'm going to try and figure out how to throw some down and have a switch that I can flip to make the element light up.

In real life these things are basically just a Minecraft performance enhancer.

Was watching that link on the Piston (the second one) and saw the guy use his pick to break sand and it didn't make the life of his pick come up.

Is the diamond (is it diamond? The greenish-blue?) now infinite health or something?

I've only ever found diamond 1 time. I don't do too much digging, but I also don't play Minecraft that much anymore.

He probably has a variety of mods installed. All diamonds do in game is make badass (but mostly unnecessary) tools.

You have to get very close to bedrock to find diamonds.

Yeah, one time I went down to bedrock and dug around for over an hour and couldn't find any. Found a ton of redstone, but no diamond.

Now I just use regular stone as it's plentiful.

Diamond tools do save a lot of time during a dig...but I usually go with stone, too.
Minecraft Quote

I use stone for everything and keep one iron pickaxe around just for the stuff you can't get with stone. Stone isn't so slow that wasting iron or diamonds makes sense to me.

If you're in a hurry in Minecraft, you're playing the wrong damn game.

Go down to level 12 and dig in any direction - you'll find plenty of lava-caves and usually a few diamonds in them. It's quicker and more fun than strip mining for them at least.

Is level 12 considered from sea level down or from bed rock up?
