Day 2:
Way better. Within 5 minutes into build, I knew we had a reasonable chance to run the table and top 4. UB was locked in from the start and the only question was whether to maindeck a Jhessian Thief/Stratus Walk/Disperse package. I'm fairly proud that we chose against it because of how tempting it looks, but it doesn't fit the decks overall game plan to control the game out. There are many draws where Thief just can't get in or Stratus Walk is a blank. The UB deck didn't drop a game all day going 10-0.
I played RG ramp/tokens/bombs which was also locked in fairly quickly, but we didn't know exactly what it would look like. We were deciding whether to build WR or WG using the G cards in the GR sideboard, which are aggressive, but mostly filler in a deck that good. I graded the decks 7.5, 8, 9.
I played better. I didn't make any major errors, but we lost the first round to inferior decks. I rolled my opponent game 1 by flipping Nissa on turn 7 and casting Gaea's Revenge on the same turn, but then lost game 9 to eliminate us.
In round 11, I got paired against UB control. Game 1 looked fairly close until I got in with my Valeron Wardens/Pharika's Disciple with Rogue's Passage. A few turns later, my opponent told his teammates that it was a good matchup for him and I was only winning this game because of Rogue's Passage and that my deck wasn't that good. As he said this, I flipped Hangarback Walker to my Nissa, cast it for 4 and saced it to Fiery Conclusion with Embermaw Hellion out to kill his Kothophed. He conceded.
In round 12, I finished my match and went to help the UB deck. I arrived to see a pretty complex board state in the UB mirror where we have Disciple of the Ring out. Apparently, villain's sideboard strategy was to mill us out. His Talent of the Telepath missed all 4 Unholy Hungers and somehow only hit a Reave Soul and a Negate. He also had Returned Centaur and Sphinx's Tutelage. This meant our Undead Servants and Disciple were extremely well fed. After taking all this in, I whispered the following in my teammate's ear on one turn:
I just started laughing, while the opponent groaned. The embarrassing part was that the line I was going to suggest didn't kill the opponent.
We ended up 3-2 on the day to end 10-4 for a mincash. Team tournaments are the best.
