Conversation between me and a Swedish friend who I found in the same 8-4 Urza draft:

him: have you been drafting a lot? This is my 5th Urza draft I think.
me: Yeah I've been drafting a lot, started with one Urza set a couple days ago and am up to 33 boosters now. Haven't opened any money cards though so you might have won more than me
him: wow, well yeah probably, I have 3 Rectors, a Monolith, a Sneak Attack and a SoT so far.
me. WTFWTFWTF! The biggest money rare I've opened in 30+ Urza/Masques drafts is a Goblin Welder. 7 tix, amazing right.
him: oh yeah I have a Welder in this draft too

FFFFUUUU

I'm in a big debate between getting back into mtgo or magic in general. Every time I do i sink a ton of money and never go to many tournaments to get anything back

I feel ya on that one. I just got back into it recently fully aware of all of the repercussions.

I decided to dedicated 2014 to full time MTGO and major live tournaments & qualifiers.

I figured I've given poker 8 full time years of my life, I could take a break and give MTG one year as see how much fun I have.

Got to see someone live the dream today.... Black Lotus, Mox Emerald, Forest, Channel, pay 16 life, cast Genesis Wave for 16, dump a few Eldrazi onto the table.

I mean yeah I guess a guy could channel out Emrakul on turn 1, but why shoot for that when you can dream big?

And then he lost to turn 1 goblin guide into lightning bolt?

Boros. Every. Time.

Had a heartbreaking moment when I was forced to choose between pick 5 Arid Mesa and pick 5 Rishadan Port. Took Mesa and hated life, then I got Port 13th anyway.

Also actually passed Wasteland this draft, which isn't super common for me. Think it was Figure of Destiny 4th pick (also pack 1), but not sure.

You didn't think Figure would table? Wasteland seems much less likely to table than Figure.

What is the best pick here? I went with Jace because Jace, but it was a struggle not to pick Bribery when I already had a Mana Vault. I tend to value Bribery much higher than most people do.

Also, LOL at 5th pick Jace.

Never touched cube, but my thought process went like this:

-Jace can bounce a bribed creature and in a close pick between two bombs I like to take the one that trumps the other one
-But oh snap, you have a Simic Sky Swallower

EDIT: Re: Fonkey's post, that wouldn't actually kill him because blockers but it is kind of funny to think that he arguably should have spent less life (topping out at 10-12 or whatever his most expensive permanent costs is still almost a guaranteed win and less likely to die to some fluke burn draw)

1st time ever drafting this cube with my QP's and came up with this, Hope I can 3-0

chopstick, no I don't think Figure ever goes 12th (and neither does Wasteland). The assumption was I could only have one of those cards, and the card I wanted was Figure.

Probably picking Bribery there but can't fault someone for either pick.

Boros is solid and all, but it sure gets boring after a while imo. More fun to do some unfair things, I <3 the mana denial strategies.

Gotta post this beauty. Easy 6-0, don't think any of my opponents ever had more than 4 mana available max.

....so more Boros right?

Seriously though neat deck, and I agree it's fun to do something else once in a while. Yesterday for example I drafted a deck that was almost WW, with only like 6 red cards or something (!)

I've also drafted some insanely broken blue/x decks with all the good cards and good ramp and bribery upheaval bla bla etc, and those decks inevitably go 1-1 or 2-1. Sooner or later you run into an actual good deck. Oh well, they're still fun to draft once in a while.

Haha yeah, good Boros decks certainly often have some griefer/mana denial aspects to them. Plus Mana Tithe is pretty stellar in Boros. I meant decks that focus more or less exclusively on resource denial, like the one above, braids, wildfire etc.

Somehow won a draft with mono white a few days ago, that was kinda cute. Boros gone wrong. Winter Orb was absolutely stellar.

ETA: Re: 6 red cards. Some Boros decks do indeed end up more white heavy when others are doing monored, which seems to be happening more frequently now. Not a crisis by any means, just play red for the single red mana burn.

I haven't been too impressed with it the few times I've played it and have preferred to have it in the SB and side it in if I'm on the draw. That being said I'm not sure how good it actually is. Probably should have played it over the Lynx given that I have zero fetches.

Wayfarer is insane. WW is insane, only slightly worse than Boros. Nothing miraculous about winning with monowhite if it's built properly (like a Boros deck heh).

fabian, how'd you get the natural order?

anyone: you can use qp's to cube?

nahtrick, if you have 15 season 1 QPs you can enter a QP Cube draft, where the winner gets a foil Natural Order.

I just gotta say, as a guy who likes playing a ton of limited magic but not paying a ton of money, I love the phantom events, and any and all phantom drafts in particular.

IMO, you have to be pretty bad at magic to not "go infinite" (with phantom points only obv.) playing the swiss queues. I can't remember the last time I didn't go at least 2-1 in the holiday cube, with the exception of one draft where I went 0-3 which was a combination of horribly bad luck with mulligans AND horrible drafting resulting in a horrible deck.

Obviously you're never going to make a ton or build an insane collection, but being able to play limited magic for $0 is pretty fantastic.

According to http://www.magicev.com/, you need to have a win % of 71 to break even on cube swiss. That's like top 1%. Same for M14/THS phantom. So "pretty bad" seems like a bad description.
