ooh, what's this

I learned to play and stopped playing magic over the course of onslaught block, doesn't seem like i missed much. my goblin bidding deck is still solid, but my burning bridge/skullcap deck is a lost cause outside of casual imo

running subpar at poker's getting me to look at other things to pass some time for a bit.. is MODO just another term for MTGO?

anyway, if I'm going to open an account I'm probably going to join a 4 week league or something to get the most play as possible without playing constructed. besides, limited is more fun ainec.

any pointers for getting started? I don't want to play a 10ed league since that's going to be boring, but I know about nothing after mirrodin. What should I play?

MODO = Magic Online Digital Objects

Same thing. Just the first name for it.

Around this time last year, they said leagues would be in beta by the end of last summer. A few weeks ago, they said they won't be starting work on leagues before the end of the second quarter. Interpret that how you want.

well, i did notice the thread being old.

what format do you guys think has the most competitive play per dollar for someone not sticking around? Anything like pauper constructed/limited going on online?

Pauper Classic is on MODO, yes. The prize is packs of 10th, which is garbage. They sell for 3 tix each while the entry fee is 2 tix, so you need to win 66.6% of matches to break even. That's very hard.

Standard/Extended rewards packs of Shards of Alara, which are worth 4.5 tix or so. You can win less than half your matches and go infinite. Borrow a deck from someone!

Reading this thread really makes me want to play MODO, I just cant fathom getting used to the online interface. How difficult was it for you guys?

I know I can buy tix for pokerstars cash, so its basically free since I wont notice 100-200 missing from stars (OMG BRAGAMENT). I'd like to think im decent at drafting, so I could maybe go infinite, or at least keep my cost/draft low. It might end up being cheaper than drafting live, since reselling cards is so easy.

def better than drafting live. no cards to keep track of. gets really addictive though.

I think the online interface is pretty simple to use. You can set stops for whichever step you want on the fly, so you can be assured of playing an ability at opponent's end of turn or a spell during pre-combat.

Also, click to tap, etc. is pretty easy.

Right, but if you forget to set a stop then you're ****ed.

There is a slight learning curve, but before long you will be making much fewer mistakes than in live play. I would even recommend someone who doesn't know the rules that well to play online to learn how everything works better.

FWIW, I played for a couple weeks while it was free during the server/software upgrade (I haven't played since 'cuz I have enough time sinks already but I still check this thread in case I change my mind). I hadn't played Magic since Antiquities and I found it super-easy without much learning curve except the cards themselves. You'll have no problem.

The way to go infinite is to play Constructed, not Limited.

What's an optimal affinity decklisting for MTGO play? (I remember card availability impacting MTGO metagame versus PTQ metagame; is that still the case, or have they merged perfectly now?)

It took me about 4 matches before I'd say I was legitimately acclimatized. I remember the very first deck I drafted had 3 Vithian Stingers and 2 Blood Cultists (in addition to a bunch of general Jundy goodness), but all my pingers were committing tactical suicide on account of my terrible misclicking, and I ended up getting beaten down by Cathartic Adepts twice in a row. No joke.

Hehe - you really see some great misclicks on MODO.
I remember years ago when it was pretty new, playing R/U ONSx3 draft.
My opponent accidentally cast Lavamancer's skill on *my* wizard, rather than putting it on his own and then pinging mine.

On another subject, I entered a MED2 sealed deck and cracked a foil badlands, which someone bought for 125 tix! Felt like winning the lottery lol.

so I opened an account and took a look inside

without spending anything on draftaments, i decided to look at the bots in the classifieds, and i found out that there were some that gave away worthless, mostly underpowered commons for free

since there were a couple of these bots and each gave away your choice of 64 crappy commons, i decided to take up the challenge and build a pauper constucted deck from
the trash. I ended up with something better than i expected

those bots didn't have any good removals, so running red was kind of forcing it. anyway, it turned out pretty well, for a deck costing $0 that is

they should make a format for "free-bot cards only", it would be so fun, sifting through the trash.
