I haven't played in a while (and I'm bad) - anyone know if they are bringing back the online leagues anytime soon?

nvm -- maybe Q2 2009 (I doubt it)

Ok, so I know very little about mtgo, but I really like the game. I don't feel like investing alot since well it's a game. I guess I want to get a pretty good pauper deck going -

any tips for which common sets I should buy on ebay since it seems like the best price per card (a little over 0.01/card compared to 64 for a ticket)? Trading tickets would probably be cheaper to get a deck, but more time consuming since I would need to find exact cards (which I have no clue) to make a deck.

Triple Conflux draft is silly.

Just force Esper, focusing on UB, splashing white.

Your curve is just dumb, turn 2 zombie outlander- 2/2 for UB, pro green.

Turn 3- Sedraxis Alchemist bouncing their dude or Parasitic Strix to bink them for 2.

All the manafixing probably makes 5cg viable too.

It was viable in AAA. In fact, it's pretty much all I ever draft.

Right, I was talking about CCC only though.

Really, I cant think of any green specific colorfixers.

Every color has the landcycler, then there is armillary sphere and rupture spire at common.

5c esper might be best since esper is by far the best color(s)

G3 sorcery that fetches a plains, mountain, island, and swamp and puts them in your hand. Pretty good green specific fixer, unless you meant something that specifically fixed for green.

Thats uncommon.

I meant something that was a specific green common fixer, something like lay of the land or harrow. All the colors are basically equal for fixing in CCC

CCC WTF. They were running ACC at the prerelease, so I drafted a bunch of 5c esper decks and took four panaromas and trilands in the shards pack. So many Esper Cormorants!

Really I was only white for cormorants, the BU stuff is usually the base for me.

Hmm my lame attempt at a burn deck. Pretty cookie cutter, but it basically cost me 1 tix, so whatever. I would like to improve it, but I'd rather start to work on another pauper deck. Possible improvements include spark elementals, mogg fanatic, and lightning bolts (incinerate is better, but haven't run into regen decks yet - though I will). Any thoughts or complete tweaks? - I know it's a pretty lame deck.

16 mountains
4 forgotten caves

2 Frostling -- need to go
4 Alder-Staff Boggart -- again need to go (kind of nice to clash)
4 Heartlash Cinder -- not great, but useful
4 Inner-Flame Acolyte
4 Keldon Marauders

1 Lava Spike
4 Volcanic Hammers
1 Barbed Lightning
4 Rift Bolt
4 Shock
4 Tarfire
4 Shard Valley

Pauper deck obviously

Classic Pauper is so much fun. I have a mono-blue deck that is doing fairly well - when I get a chance I'll post the list.

It is interesting. I like magic because of the different ways to build decks. I went head and 'splurged' I spent another 2 tix to pick up 2x Mogg Fanatics, 4x Spark Lightning and 3x Lava Spike.

Doubt that I'll go all the way with this deck to add the 4x Lightning Bolt, 2x Mogg Fanatic, Fireblasts (and firebolt - not that needed) - fun deck, but the avenrif****cher can be a pain to deal with as well as counter decks.

*sidenote: my roommate has a small collection that he inherited of real cards, seems like mostly commons (not sure what edition/blocks), I'll probably try to make some decks with these after I get them sorted - advantage mtgo.

man I played a fair bit last year online, but got really annoyed with the software and stopped, this thread is making me want to start up again lol

I never got really good at the game, I think my rating is low 1700s online

Haven't MODO'ed in a long time (MTGO3 tilts me) but a 1700 online rating was about equal to a 1900 live rating. Not sure if the ratings have got softer.

They definitely have. Ratings inflation and all that. Not sure that 1700 MTGo ever equaled 1900 IRL, either - when it first came out, everything was 8-4 and all the awful people had to play in those, so there was probably mad inflation early.

Anyway, online is definitely tougher, for obvious reasons (same arguments apply to poker). I can't think of an equivalency, but 1700 MODO = 1800 IRL sounds about right, I guess.

So I'm playing Affinideez in 1.x this season. I have two PTQs that I can reasonably attend. I'm not considering playing anything else, so do not comment on my deck choice. The commons/uncommons cost me $15 and the rares are being shipped to me by my brother, who won a PTQ a few weeks ago. I refuse to buy an Extended deck and no one else can loan me NLU or Faeries, so Affinity it is.

Right now I'm running 3 Fatal Frenzy, but I might not even bother with it. My brother said that it was basically useless all day, and that he'd rather have Enforcers (which I'm playing anyway). I have to test more, but is anyone else playing Affinity and can they comment on it? Comments welcome on Delay maindeck. I'm probably not playing it, but I'd like to hear from those who are (besides Bill Stark).

As for my sideboard, I'm probably running:

4 Path to Exile
4 Thoughtseize
4 Ethersworn Canonist / Trickbind
3 Relic of Progenitus

I could play Krark-Clan Shaman against Elves, but that deck is so awful (it loses to Zoo and Faeries, the two biggest decks) and I lose to it anyway, so I don't see the point in bothering.

My brother told me I should play Kataki for the mirror and just bash my opponent for two every turn. This probably would have been a better strategy had Conflux not come out, since people will just have Path to Exile to stop Kataki and bring it in against the mirror rather than using Ancient Grudge at all.

Last edited by anononon; 02-20-2009 at 07:02 AM. Reason: or I might play Grudge over Relic I guess (and by Grudge I mean Hurkyl's Recall)

Affinity took 1st/2nd at the Vancouver PTQ this weekend which is horse****, since I've been counting on it as a sleeper pick in the PacNW (most people are playing G/B Loam, Sullivan Red, Naya Zoo, and Faeries).

Here's my list now:

4 Ornithopter
4 Master of Etherium
4 Cranial Plating
4 Arcbound Worker
4 Arcbound Ravager
4 Frogmite
4 Thoughtcast
4 Springleaf Drum
4 Chromatic Star
3 Myr Enforcer
3 Shrapnel Blast

2 Blinkmoth Nexus
4 Ancient Den
4 Vault of Whispers
4 Seat of the Synod
4 Great Furnace

SB:

4 Ethersworn Canonist
4 Path to Exile
4 Thoughtseize
3 Relic of Progenitus

In general I don't like Trickbind in the sideboard, preferring to go with Canonist. Yeah, it gets Electrolyzed, but it's a threat and it actually does something, rather than needing to leave mana up to Trickbind them (in too many cases I'm just getting Gigadrowsed right out if they have time, which they generally will if I keep holding mana back).

Shrapnel Blast has been way better than Fatal Frenzy / Soul's Fire in the maindeck, since those cards are pretty awful in general except in blowouts.

My friend won a PTQ with the worst list - it had one Fatal Frenzy maindeck and 4 Ancient Grudge in the sideboard with no Tree of Tales.
