I think you are right about Juzam Djinn though. Counterspells are worse because they were too good before. It it not possible to look at Mana Drain and not recognize how overpowered it is. Cancel is priced right I think. Land Destruction always sucked in tournaments. There was the occasional Ponza deck that would make a splash, but overall just being a sligh deck prob would have been good enough as well.
I agree that Morphling would probably still be playable, but just barely. Hypnotic didn't make much of a splash when it was in 9th, although it was in a few extended lists, and some early lists in standard when 9th was first legal. Still, both of these are a far cry from what they once were. Creatures have also got much more powerful in the 1-2 years you mentioned. Lorwyn Block has insane creatures, and Alara has some really nice ones as well. Mana Drain is obviously really broken, but has never been legal in Standard. I'm not sure if it was ever even legal in 1.5. Counterspell rotated a while ago, and we don't even have Mana Leak in standard anymore. For 2 mana, you have Broken Ambitions, Remove Soul, and Negate. Not exactly 'UU Counter Target Spell'

Anyway, the point about the game is somewhat true. I mean, Morphling is getting played, so that point is fairly ridiculous, but the game has mostly changed over to a sorcery/creature-based strategy where Cruel Ultimatum is somehow a viable card in Standard.

I don't know that it's a worse game, or more casual even, but it's definitely different. The days of overly complex decks like Draw-Go or Five-Color Oath are gone, and I'm not sure that it's such a bad thing. (And this is coming from someone who rode Forbiddian to a 20xx Extended rating.)

Also, I enjoyed this:

Yes, and I'll be playing it in Kyoto so see you there if you're qualified.

KyleB, you related to the guy who just recently won a Honolulu PTQ? Was reading a recap here http://www.mtgsalvation.com/969-refl...onolulu-1.html and was curious.

Also, coming from a guy who played during Ice Age/Revised and came back for Llorwyn, I can say I like it a little better now. Slightly better for the casual fan.

Yes, that's my brother. He ran like God and played against the dumbest morons in the top eight. (Someone Darkblasted his ravager when he had 8 artifacts in play.)

He got a free win because his opponent in round seven sat at the wrong seat and played the wrong person, lols.

Still, Kevin's a good player. He won a JSS qualifier in his last year of eligibility but couldn't go to Nationals due to a family reunion.

He is also the world's best DDR player and a top-five ITG player. No jokes; Google his name if you don't believe me.

Read up. They give me **** about liking Cancel in limited. ImsaKidd refuses to let it go even though it has stopped being funny about 20 posts ago.

I find it very sexy.

I played in the Psychatog era with Psychatog and imagine it was a lot like Draw-Go. I played a lot of cancels counterspells and it was still an interesting game of course but the masses like creatures and big creatures and sorceries and big effects. I'm glad that's viable now.

Actually that it what made me recognize his name. I remembers posts from you about your brother who was the best DDR player in the world. Well, congrats to him anyway.

I have googled Chris Jobin on google regarding DDR/ITG using words like "Chris Jobin", "Jobin DDR" "Jobin ITG", "Chris Jobin ITG" "In the groove Chris Jobin"

and no matchs to him within the first 3 pages, whereas Yasu/JSB turned up on first page.

Unless your bro is JSB.

Are you an idiot? My name is kyleb. What would make you think that my last name is "Jobin?" If you bothered to click the link and had better than eighth grade reading comprehension skills, you'd see that "Kevin Boddy" was featured in that article and won the PTQ.

Furthermore, where did I say I took Cancel over Bull Ceredon? I said I Cancelled someone's Bull Ceredon.

Do they still do Rochester drafts in MODO? Would anybody be interested in running a 2+2 Rochester draft? I know close to nothing about the new set but it might be fun to hang out and chat with some of you guys, especially if we can get imsa and kyle to come.

EDIT: Of course I ask this right before I go away all weekend, but we could do something next weekend or you guys could get something together without me...SNIFF.

Rochester drafts unfortunately no longer happen

In pre-release beta and maybe early release they had it, but it was removed presumably due to unpopularity

Was pretty fun

Maybe it also took too long and took too much server space? (pure speculation) probably more because of the unpopularity though.

I played a lot around Onslaught and they had Rochester drafts then. Sucks that they removed the option. I mean, granted they didn't run often at all, but they were still a nice alternative to regular drafts. Maybe they took them off because it meant people were taking more time to draft and they weren't going through packs + tickets as quickly.

Oh well, maybe we could organize a draft anyway and talk about it here afterwards.

I still play Type 1/1.5 all over NE, solid circuit here for those who have old cards, usually 15-20$ entrance fees with mox for first and duals/fows on down. Good times.

Now that I've ignored Sykes, I'd like to post a list that I won FNM (lol) with last week. A real implementation of Sligh:

4 Mogg Fanatic
4 Figure of Destiny
4 Tattermunge Maniac
4 Hellspark Elemental
4 Goblin Outlander
3 Boggart Ram-Gang
3 Shambling Remains

4 Magma Spray
4 Flame Javelin
4 Incinerate

6 Mountain
4 Graven Cairnes
4 Auntie's Hovel
4 Sulfurous Springs
4 Ghitu Encampment

SB:

4 Blightning
4 Volcanic Fallout
3 Everlasting Torment
3 Guttural Response
1 Terror

I planned on playing the above list but when I got there, I noticed everyone was playing Kithkin and R/W Reveillark. I audibled into the following changes:

Maindeck:
-3 Shambling Remains
+3 Volcanic Fallout

Sideboard:
-3 Volcanic Fallout
+3 Terror

I'm contacting the editor at SCG about writing for them again (my articles from 2005 are a big lol); I'll post it here if it goes up.
