My friend was actually describing Mount and Blade as similar to Total War the other day. He said it's like Total War if you are an only in control of one of the individuals.

Got a few questions.

How does Stream work. I was looking at buying City:Skylines and see you can get it through Stream. Is that the same as just buying it directly from the distributors?

I see Stream has a cool community and you can download mods/expansions etc. Is that only available through Stream?

If you buy it on Stream, can you play it offline or is everything online? What if you buy it directly from the distributor?

Lastly, does Stream cost anything?

Once again, sorry for the "old man" questions. Just not sure how it all works.

Buying it through steam is basically the same. Just a third party seller.

Mods are also available outside of steam

Steam can be played both offline and online. Same with the distributor.

Most physical games you buy these days will activate on an online service ( usually steam ).

It's steam, not stream.

Yes you can play offline, but you have to have logged in and then set offline mode , so some planning required for flights/etc.

Steam is free. So free.

steam not stream.

same as buying from distributor,often cheaper and is a client that install and launch the game easily.
idk about cities mods but Im sure not all mods are on the steam site (workshop) but even if not on the site they should be compatible.
u can play every game offline unless the company that made them made them online only (idk about cities I suppose yes?)
u dont get achievments when offline
steam is free but like crack it will ruin u.

Thanks for the quick response guys.

"Stream" <= old man!

So, if I sign up to STEAM, buy the game, download mods etc, then change to offline, I can then play the game. When ever I log back in, does it sync up?

Or if I start a game online, then can I take it offline? How does that work?

And finally, if I just go the route of buying the game and not using steam, how do you get mods etc?

You can auto-install a lot of mods via steam workshop, I think. Many games support cloud saves, meaning it'll upload your saves and you can delete the game and any saves, then reinstall later and start where you left off. You definitely don't have to stay online for non-online games, but if you keep steam online you'll get updates whenever they're ready.

Oh, steam also lets you back up your installs and saves locally if you prefer not to have redownload games after uninstalling.

Having had a look, you don't get this option.
The physical DVD version has some of the game files, but you must activate the game and use steam to access it, so tldr, buy it the cheapest way you can - you're going to be using steam regardless.

Well, some games have whole launchers for using mods, like skyrim I think. Steam does make it lads easier to mod tho: click a button and you're done
