Does anyone have examples of games that worked out well after Early Access? I'm sure there are some but the whole thing just smells like a huge scam playing on peoples' constant anticipation and desire to be "part of the process."
Yes generally alpha builds have bugs in them. If you want to support the game for $20 you get early access which include tickets for events such as battle royale. Battle royale is a tournament style last man standing event, where the top finishing players get cosmetic rewards, tickets to more events, crates containing cosmetic itesms, and keys to open those crates. You can buy tickets to events, I'm pretty sure that's all you can buy. If that's considered 'riddled with microtransactions', then color me surprised. They are $.99 for a ticket btw.
If you don't want to buy early access you don't have to. The game will be F2P in a few months, and it's coming out for Playstation 4 down the line as well.
IDK. I love the genre, and the company is reputable. I'll stop riding its dick for now until the game comes out, but if anyone is going to get early access, add me on Steam - Killerwalski
Here's your list of successful early access games (subjective opinion but w/e):
- FTL - Probably a shining example for you if you've played it
- Minecraft - hard to say that didn't work out well when I see kids wearing their clothes and dressing up like creepers
- Rust - one of the best games I've ever played.
- Kerbel Space Program
- Wasteland 2
- Warframe
- Terraria I believe offered early access
- Starbound definitely was early access
- Divinity: Original Sin
- Don't Starve
- Seven Days to Die
- Project Zomboid
The list goes on I'm sure. Something to note is that many of those titles were indie companies with small budgets. We're talking about Sony Online Entertainment... Creators of Planetside 2, Everquest, and DC Universe. Successful titles by anyone's standards.
