If you told someone 15 years ago that an isometric RPG (Divinity) and a platformer (Shovel Knight) would be breaths of fresh air in video games, you would have been punched in the face. Well, maybe if you told an irrationally violent person; otherwise they probably would have just thought you were crazy.

Yeah, I kind of agree, I'm a bit tired of all the zombie/survival stuff. You'd think the market is saturated enough but no the industry needs to milk it till people vomit zombies.

I don't think the market is close to saturated because many of these games are poorly executed or unfinished. And while it is natural to lump all the survival games together, you can take these games in so many different directions that even if a definitive game comes out in the genre another game could easily come along and have success by taking a different track.

Not a zombie game, but I have been playing The Long Dark a fair amount lately and I am enjoying it a lot. The other night I froze to death while ice fishing to try to get food so I wouldn't starve to death. Sandbox mode is fun as is and the story mode potential is high.

The Long Dark is nothing like Dayz. One example of the diversity within the genre.

How long until they make a diving survival game with zombie sharks?

Survival games in general are just really big right now. I'll speculate that it's due to the success of Minecraft but I suspect someone will set me straight with how survival games were already getting big. On Grantland, Mark Listani wrote about the state of movies and how the strategy now is to get people excited about not necessarily what's coming out now but what's coming next, hence Marvel's hedging strategy about announcing the next five years worth of movies (for example, there next Avengers movie is "Age of Ultron"...but then we have "Infinity War", so who really cares about Age of Ultron??). I wonder if, by releasing unfinished games, the game market it kind of propelling itself in the same way- here, play DayZ for a little while and get your fix, but don't forget about H1Z1 coming soon!

Depth, it's a hyper realistic simulation diving game. You try to grab treasure and sharks try to stop you. Sometimes you lose a limb, sometimes you die

You guys seem to be forgetting a little gem known as Dead Island, it's obviously up there among the GOAT's with Max Payne 3.

I haven't played it in quite some time, but Left 4 Dead 2 is amongst my all-time favorite games.

I enjoyed the single-player game, but yeah, online is where it shines. I used to just play with randoms, which I didn't really mind.

game is fairly dead now, so you definitely need to play with friends. And since a full versus game requires 8 players that can be difficult to setup.

You can legitimately play as low as 1v1 though (on modded server).

I still see y2k based games get released.

2 of my friends and I play through a campaign mission about once a month. It's pretty fun even though we always get dominated in the final fight.
