wtf is the point of that missing hat video?

Anyway I got the master sword last night, feels good man. I'm about 20 hours in and have only just started the beast at Zora, haven't done any other dungeons. I was kind of worried about the changes to the Zelda formula but those worries have completely faded, this is such an insane leap.

Yeah but is the crafting extensive enough for you

Crafting sells games yo. Seriously though it's actually pretty addictive and I usually hate crafting in games. I shared similar concerns as people pre-launch so here's my take on them.

Crafting - It's simple, you craft materials to make food or potions. They can give you boosts in health, stamina, defence, movement speed, attack power and weather resilience. It's pretty basic but the act of farming and then cooking the right mix for the right situation is surprisingly addictive. Finding something like a big radish is exciting lol.

Empty World - It's not empty at all, it's huge and varied. There are stretches that are kind of bare but I feel like it's done by design. The game is all about exploration, finding something cool by chance or finally reaching a destination wouldn't have that same feeling of discovery if the world was jam packed. It feels satisfying when you find new places and so far it feels like there's a **** of places to find. This is one of the most thoroughly designed open worlds I've ever seen, everything little thing has had some thought put into it. There are so many subtle little touches for example you might be on a mountain that has two tips, stand on one tip and you can't see a shrine, stand on the other and you will. That kind of thing happens way too much to be by chance and given the size of the world it's a pretty insane level of detail. The ability to climb pretty much anything coupled with the hang glider encourages you to explore. A lot of the game just screams depth in simplicity. When you climb a tower you don't unlock a set a way points, you have to look around and just go there yourself, there's no arrow telling you where to go or anything. On the way there you might see a bunch of other stuff you want to visit. The variety in what you find and can do is pretty crazy. If the game does one thing absolutely perfectly it's making you want to explore it. The world not only feels alive but you get a sense of it's history.

Lack of dungeons and traditional Zelda style progression - Progression is definitely very different, it's a lot more subtle but I'm finding it satisfying. You have quite a few abilities right at the start but no idea about anything else. Because the game is so open you just progress by doing and learning. It's really hard to explain in words to someone who hasn't played it. You will find areas that you can't enter unless you do certain things or have specific gear but the way in which you work out those things or get the gear might be different for a lot of people. I haven't played any of the 4 dungeons yet but I've done 48 shrines and I've mostly enjoyed them so far. Each one is only roughly 5 - 10 mins long and the puzzle ones are usually pretty easy but the act of finding them is fun itself. There are quite a few that you can't enter unless you have the right equipment or do a quest first, another factor that adds to exploration being the real point of the game. Your "progression" comes naturally.

Weapon degradation - I thought I would hate this and at first I didn't like it. It actually took me a few hours to get over it however I still think it's a little unnecessary. On one hand, it does make you think about battles more and forces you to try as many weapons as possible. On the other hand there's so many weapons throughout the world that you're never short and can usually get a decent amount of your favourite style anyway. Certain enemies react differently to certain weapon types, it would be nice to at least have a locker you can store weapons to free your inventory so that you can stock up on stuff when you know you're going to encounter those enemies. Even the ability to repair broken weapons would have been nice. It's not that big of a problem, my inventory is full of beast weapons right now, just would have been nice to have a little more control over it.

The weapon durability is def my least favorite thing. I'd be ok with it if stuff lasted just a little longer and/or you could repair. Seems dumb to pick up a weapon and not even have it last one durable bad guy. Fun to throw near broken stuff though.

side note - I've been using this while playing, kinda nice even though its cheating.

I've played around 40 hours and have done one dungeon (zora) and like 20 shrines lol, I spend most of my time just wandering around exploring and doing side quests and ****. Gonna be playing this game forever. GOAT game imo but I'm not really bothered about the more RPGy stuff like crafting, in fact I'd be fine without the little crafting that there is but I don't mind it.

Yeah I don't see myself playing anything else for a long time.

Just killed a Lynel for the first time. Feels good.

large crafting spoilers:

Aside from food, there is also fairly extensive armor crafting. The level 0 guardian armor itself is crafted, and almost all armors can be levelled up. Armors get set bonuses at level 2 and above, you craft/upgrade them at fairy fountains. For example the ninja/stealth set gives a bonus of much faster move speed at night", guardian armor set bonus vastly increases attack when using guardian weapons.

sick game. just got the
Spoiler:
master sword
and have done 2 dungeons and am about to start my third. some days i just stick to exploring/doing shrines and seeds... im at just over 50 shrines or so..

BOTW > OOT imo.. really love the openness of the world and the ability to not have to do things in a set order bc of dungeon items gating off content.

Finished two dungeons and around 30 shrines. I really feel like they've crafted the perfect world around the story they're telling.

I watched a 53:13, maybe the same one or perhaps he just did it slightly quicker. Significantly different to the 58:xx I watched the other day, it's amazing how these guys find time. Still plenty of mistakes, misclicks, slow parts and bad rng in this run too. I particularly like the whistle-walking lol.

I like that they're not glitching, but it also trivializes the game (not their fault obv). I didn't have plans to play it, but after watching these I'm not sure I even could. I probably shouldn't describe why even within spoilers. So if you are currently enjoying the game don't spoil it for yourself watching these speedruns! (even more so than clicking spoilers in the zelda thread!)

Its funny how complicated any new game can seem, then some nerd crushes that observation by pwning the end boss w/ no HP and underwear.

Anybody ever use a generic wii u pro controller? 50 bucks for an official one seems a bit high for an essentially dead system

Yeah I've used a few third party ones at a friends house. They're crap, especially the fake china ones and the PDP gamecube looking ones. The pro controller is worth the money, it feels great.

Awesome. I've got BOTW coming on a free gamefly trial. Will most likely just pay to keep it at a ten dollar discount.

nice

venick said he didn't expect that to be the record for long and he expects someone to get sub 50 soon

no amiibo seems more legit

Can someone explain what the numbers are next to weapons/armor?

Also, are there any places to buy sapphires/diamonds/etc or you just have to find them?
Legend Of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Quote

For weapons it seems to be damage output. Enemy HP seems to go down in increments of that number except for the final strike in a combo which does a bit more.
