Hah I didn't like that either. The Wii ruined it.

I feel like the crafting system is like other parts of the game: wide but shallow. You can craft 100 things, but all they do is restore hearts and maybe give a small buff. You can explore a massive world, but enemy encampments are few and far between. You can do 100+ mini-dungeons, but they're basically "solve this small puzzle, get cookie" affairs.

Just seems like a bad trend that has me worried, and that worry sticks around after consuming a lot of reviews.

The reviews made it seem like some of the shrines are actually pretty complicated to solve, just not a dungeon.

I'm sure there will be faults to find with the game - no game is perfect. But considering the early reviews, this is easily the best Zelda game since OoT, possibly all time, and as a Zelda fan that's more than enough for me. If you aren't a fan of Zelda or look for something else in your open world games then whatever, but it's really rare to see this level of universal praise for a Zelda title on launch.

meh, I like the solving dungeon part of zelda. But some of my favorite zelda games of all time have had very few dungeons - windwaker comes to mind. Same with majora's mask. There's like what, 5 major ones? Still a very enjoyable game, to me anyway.

If they try to make it like skyrim, I won't like it. If they embrace the thing in zelda games where you see an area that you can't quite access yet because you dont have x item, i'll love it. I love that stuff. It's like oh hey, I got this item, look at all the new places I can go now, like the first time you get the hookshot in several titles.

my top favorites in order are - ocarina of time (very close with majora's mask though), majora's mask, link to the past, windwaker, maybe some gameboy one i'm not remembering off the top of my head. I never cared much for twilight princess. I know i'm in the minority there. I weirdly enjoyed oracle of ages/seasons on GBA because of the extensive amount of collectible rings but those were more offshoot games. l loved all the unique masks in majora too, so I hope this game has a lot of that too. I'm basically consuming no reviews til I make a major decision about if I'm willing to buy a wii just for this.

Probably going to hold off until I get a Switch even though the Wii U version is reportedly very close.

Some of the YouTubers I subscribe to got advance copies and released reviews (sans spoilers) today, which has me even more stoked. One already started a Let's Play, which I'm not watching as I want to go into this game without any in depth knowledge.

I got the game today (love Amazon!) - I had no idea the physical cartridges would be so small. The Switch itself, unfortunately, I'll have to wait a bit longer - the only preorder I found was from Game Stop, and the site was clear it wouldn't be a day one delivery (pretty sure it shipped today, deliver by Monday).

I haven't found a review yet that isn't glowing. The only issue I've seen brought up is frame dropping, which is usually described as occasional and not a big deal. Super excited to plug this in the instant it arrives, but until then the reviews are keeping me pumped.

Frame drops are actually pretty annoying imo, they're minor but have been pretty frequent for me (when docked anyway; I played a while on the handheld and it was very smooth).

Game is great though but it took me a while to get into it. I hope there's some cool towns and stuff though not just all fields and shrines.

With any luck they can patch the poor docked mode performance. Sustained periods at 20fps is absurd when it's only 900p and the 720p handheld mode does not ever drop from 30.

I noticed the frame rate drops but its only been in a few instances for me, and only once during actual gameplay. The rest were when I made either a sudden turn or when the auto save started.

Anyone here get the Wii U version? I was planning on holding out for about a year until I can get the Switch, but I'm now just reconsidering getting the Wii U version. However the reports of frame rate dropping have scared me just a bit.

From what I read, the Wii U version is no worse at dropping frames than the Switch in docked mode. Digital Foundry should have a framerate analysis video out in a few days at most I'd guess.

this is scaring me a little, from what I saw yesterday from a few streams you get gear progression (swords with lightning effects, etc) but not anything that makes the gameplay fundamentally different every few hours (like the hookshot you mentioned, or dash boots in LttP), hopefully those things are still there and I just missed them

I watched quite a lot of Gothallion's streams. At some point he picked up an armor set that:
Spoiler:
lets you swim UP waterfalls
so there's at least some of that.

Swimming right at the onset of the game is horrible. You basically insta die if you go in the deep end.

Refurb Wii U at GameStop is $250, new switch is $300

eBay is more affordable, but still around $200 for the console alone.

Is there no limit to the amount of items you can carry or cooldowns on using them or anything?

I watched a guy fight a boss on stream and he was doing absolutely terribly, boss hitting him like crazy and him jsut running around like an idiot clearly not doing the fight right for about 10 minutes... but he won, because you can open up the menu at any time (pausing the game) and seemingly eat food to instantly recovery health infinitely and the guy had like dozens and dozens of food items.

I know Zelda games aren't really supposed to be like extremely difficult or anything, but having an unlimited inventory of healing items you can stop and use at any time seems like it would make encounters feel rather cheap.

yeah, in the og Zelda, your potions were pretty limited

I'm also not too thrilled with Link having a smart phone.

Yeah, bottles were such an amazing item to find in Zelda games because they expanded your survivability (and everything else) a great deal.

Oh well, I'm sure the game is amazing and Zelda games have never been about difficulty anyway.

Dungeons not bestowing world opening items is more eyebrow raising to me, that def IS what Zelda games have traditionally been about.

The weapon durability stuff seems impossible to not be at least somewhat annoying. It seems there are weapon damage/broke prompts every single fight that lasts more than a few hits. Is there at least an option to turn them off?

"living off the land" is a key feature of the game apparently, so them breaking regularly may be the best design decision, but the prompts are just out of control. Just give me a little red squiggle icon on my sword or something.
