Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
http://reckoning.amalur.com/en/ag
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Md50y9SuZHs
Gameplay video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxKEwgCR1CY
The game looks amazing and releases on February 7th in the US, with the demo becoming available tomorrow. From my understanding it's an open world RPG similar to TES, the loot system is like Diablo, and the combat is similar to an action game where you can combo and do special moves with amazing visuals. On top of this you are not bound to a certain class role, and can seamlessly combine melee, stealth, and magic combat schools - leading to a variety of (hopefully) unique character builds.

Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
Yeah, I thought this looked interesting when I read a little about it. I'll try to check out the demo. The studio (Big Huge Games) has been out of action for awhile but made the very good Rise of Nations back in 2003. This thing from Wikipedia about the company's history also seems to say a bit about this game's:
Quote:
Although Brian Reynolds was a founding member of Firaxis Games, he and the others left Firaxis to found a new company based on their desire to apply the complexity and concepts of the turn-based strategy genre to the real-time strategy genre.[3]
In February 2007, Big Huge Games announced that Ken Rolston, the lead designer behind The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, had come out of retirement to join the company as Lead Designer on an untitled role playing game (RPG).[4] Later that May it was announced that THQ would publish the title in 2009.[5] This marked the first title from Big Huge Games that is not distributed by Microsoft.
On January 15, 2008, THQ acquired the developer.[6]
On July 30, 2008, Grant Kirkhope joined the Big Huge Games team as an Audio Director. He had previously worked for Rare, composing for the Banjo-Kazooie and Perfect Dark games (among others).[7]
On March 18, 2009, THQ announced that due to declining economic conditions, it would close Big Huge Games unless an outside buyer could be found in the next 60 days.[8]
On May 27, 2009, 38 Studios announced that they were acquiring Big Huge Games and retaining 70 employees out of approximately 120 who were at THQ.[1]
Big Huge Games is currently developing a single player role playing game titled "Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning", and is to be released in early 2012 by Electronic Arts (EA) and 38 Studios for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. The game is set in fantasy worlds created with input from R A Salvatore and Todd MacFarlane.

Sounds like this game's been in development for like 5 years. Which can be good or bad.

Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
I have a relative that is working on this game. He said the combat is great, skill system is pretty good, but he doesn't really like the story or dialog.
I know that Schilling is really behind this game and wants it to succeed. I've been looking forward to it for a while, but its a shame that it's coming out so soon after Skyrim. I'm not sure how it will compare.

Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
The demo was great so far, although I had to leave for work after completing the tutorial. Combat feels similar to Fable, the loot system works very well, and there seems to a nice amount of diversity on the skill trees. Doubt I'll be turning Skyrim back on any time soon now that I've tried this - no doubt it's still a great game, but I prefer more hack and slash action type myself.

I didn't like not being able to remap the WASD keys, so I stopped playing it.

Yeah the PC controls seem to be lackluster. I watched my friend play on PC, and they were super awkward and the UI looks really clunky as well. I'm fairly certain if you connect a gamepad to your PC it switches to the console UI. Plus the combat feels much more fluid when using a controller imo.
Overall, the demo was really fun. The only thing I don't like is that they made stealth a non-combat skill. Doesn't seem fair that I should have to invest 10 out of my 40 non-combat skill points into it, when only finesse builds require these points to be spent. Especially if you choose to level it early on, which potentially gimps you in terms of whichever crafting skill or detect hidden (which gives you a ton of easy loot/gold).

Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
Bump it once for release. The game is really fun so far, and the reviews are accurate. Only downside I'm seeing so far is that the game is way too easy, even on hard. I hope this ramps up as I progress (only level 5 now). Regardless, I'd recommend that anyone who is into any open world RPGs gives this a look.

So how do you think it compares to Skyrim, so far?

Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
It's tough to compare so far since I doubt anyone has played much than a few hours but the game is great and the world seems pretty big aswell. One thing for sure is the combat system is much better than skyrim altough the game is easy so far, even on hard as feedthabeast said.
The only thing that I dislike is the archery since the game auto-aim for you and you have a very limited amount of arrow, that regenerates over time... Maybe it gets better as you level up and improve you archery skills but I don't really understand why they did it like this...

I like it a lot better. The world is more streamlined and linear (zones I guess), but to me climbing up to the top of a mountain just to find some crappy gear that's not even close to what I've crafted and the same types of mobs over and over just wasn't that exciting. You can't jump or swim and the story is a bit corny which irks some people, but it is fine with me. The other aspects of the game more than compensate for this.
The game really blows Skyrim out of the water when it comes to combat, loot, and respeccing. The combos are fun and easy to use, and are much more visually appealing than the moves in Skyrim. With regards to loot, there's just so much more variety. Not everyone is going to end up using the exact same thing end game.
I also prefer this class system. In Skyrim I could do everything very well, and the game was no longer challenging. I like KoA because you can freely switch classes at any point for a small fee. This not only keeps you from becoming super overpowered, but allows you to test out new builds repeatedly without worry of having messed up your skills and forcing you to start anew.
Overall, my only complaints are the difficulty and the clunky nature of the camera. I like every other aspect of the game thus far.

Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
When I played the demo I enjoyed it but thought the frame rate was a little clumpy. I'm assuming this isn't an issue in the finished copy? Probably going to go grab this before too long.

Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
I don't get what people were so impressed with here.. I played the demo, seemed pretty meh to me?
Sure tons of loot/RPG elements, but no major gameplay innovations or anything that I noticed that set it apart.
Certainly better combat then Skyrim, but if you wanted fun combat in a 3rd person single player experience why not play Batman or something?
