Re: ITT we celebrate classic Nintendo 64 games

to the guys that still use their n64:
i have the problem that the console often loses power when starting, for example:
i turn on mario kart and the nintendo logo comes up after that the start screen -- than -- black screen and here we go again: logo + start screen -- and here we go again--

this mostly happens when a game is started, nearly never happend in game. a friend of mine who has my other n64 told me of the same problem.

anyone else facing this ? (to me it looks like this [at that time] huuuge powerblock that is stuck into the behind of the n64 is a lil loose or so. i tried to fix it with paper stuck in, sometimes work, somtimes doesnt).

im using a PAL system.

thx for feedback.

DK64 is large and awesome, but I never found it to be incredibly difficult. There are a few things that you can get tripped up on and a few hidden things that are hard to find, but it's not nearly as hard to find all the little things as the SNES DK games imo.

Add in the fact that it likely had the GOAT soundtrack and sound effects, which made the game so much more enjoyable imo. I've never seen another game where the music was so perfect in every situation while keeping the overall tone of the game very light and fun.

DK64 was even better than BK in that department, which is saying something. But yeah, Rare did a phenomenal job with the music in both games.

The problem I have with my 64 is when I turn the power on there is no picture. I have to shut it off, re-start it and wiggle the chords around and it usually starts up after a bit

Re: ITT we celebrate classic Nintendo 64 games

^On the topic of N64 consoles going bad, I really recommend using Project64 as an alternative on your laptop/PC. The emulator has become extremely good. If you have a monitor, you probably can't connect your N64 to it and poor picture quality might be an issue on newer/high-res TVs.

The current legal state of ROMs is vague and there doesn't seem to be any good sources that can confirm or deny, however most claim - as does common sense - that if you own the original console and the game cartridge, playing it on an emulator is legal and fine (again, no great sources).
If you have a PS3/2/X360 controller, you can hook them up via USB using MotionJoy DS3 tool and use them as a gamepad (and even use them wireless via bluetooth). Great free software and highly recommended if you don't have a joystick/controller made for PC.
N64 games actually play really well with a dualshock3

I know I'm not exactly a good source, but the way I've always understood it: Emulators themselves are perfectly legal, whether you own the console or not. ROMs are only legal if you own the game AND make the ROM yourself, since that acts as a backup (and I believe you're entitled to 1 backup of a game that you own. If you ever sell that game or throw it away or anything, you have to destroy the backup. This whole business about backups could be a complete load of **** though, I just remember hearing a lot about it back when PS2 flip tops and slide cards were all the rage, since they allowed you to play your "legal backups"). However, downloading ROMs carries such a miniscule risk of getting into any trouble whatsoever that nobody really cares. If they were to start going after anybody, they would most likely go after the ones distributing the ROMs, not downloading them. They would most likely also go after the people who have the ability to make money by downloading ROMs, such as people that stream on twitch, before going after a "regular" person.

The way I justify downloading ROMs to myself is that the companies aren't going to be seeing any money from these games anymore since there are only used copies out there. So why should I let Gamestop or Ebay or whoever profit off of it instead? There's probably some faulty logic in there, but that's what I've been going with.

Again, that's just my understanding of everything, coming from the perspective of someone that's downloaded tons of ROMs over many years, back when all the ROM sites would have the hilarious disclaimer that if you didn't own the game you could download the ROM but had to delete it within 24 hours (do they still have that now? I haven't seen it in a long time). Take it with a grain of salt, obviously.

Harvest Moon 64 - most underrated game ever

(and most impossible to find without using a ROM)

Re: ITT we celebrate classic Nintendo 64 games

I have it. My mom got it for us for Christmas the year it came out. It was supposed to come out early to middle of December but was either delayed or their shipment came late. Pretty sure she annoyed the hell out of the people working at the nearby game store until she finally got it.

Checking out IGN it says it was released Dec 22nd '99, so pretty sure it got delayed or I got bad info on the expected release date.

Since all the usual N64 games have been mentioned dozens of times already I'll throw out two that don't get a lot of love that were really cool.

Pilotwings 64, one of the few launch games, greatly overshadowed by Super Mario 64, was super fun and had lots of replayability and showcased the system's awesome new graphics and had good physics.

Blast Corps, a quirky and challening game, an odd mix of a driving game, meets a puzzle game, sorta, hard to explain if you never played it, should pick it up if you can.

I used to play Geomon:Mystical Ninja. I have a fear the game was crap, but being young I didn't know any better. Same with Quest 64.
