It's a no brainer to a collector/veteran as it's needed to hold some card value.
If I was running an online company and wanted the highest possible sales, I probably wouldn't consider it (more products = more possible sales with minimal extra costs). Basically taking the attitude that the second hand market isn't my concern (as I don't profit from it). Being a digital format, I wouldn't be shocked if they didn't retire.
IMO, the reason MTG makes many decisions that they do is based on costs as well as understanding the need for a second hand market for stores to exist and respect to their customers who have invested money in their game. I'm not certain an online model only will have the same reasons besides maximizing company profits. It will be interesting to see their attitude.
