I wouldnt expect a guy who played mmos for 13 years to like this either. Everything he learned to appreciate all these years has been wiped away. Its like one of the GW2 developers said earlier: "If you like mmos, you should check out GW2 and if you dont like mmos, you should really check out GW2. And I am not hating on tera, I played it and it was really fun.
eurogamer has keys to TERA beta to give (at time of writing) btw.

I think the 'max' graphical settings weren't available in the GW2 Beta? Definitely not fully optimised yet either.
Sometimes keeping things simple is better, can definitely have too many skills available, how many do you really need to use really in most mmos? From what your saying you seem to have 26+ abilities for each weapon in Tera, don't you think this is overkill?
Not played either, so won't pass judgement, but GW2 looks most promising game I've seen for a long time (I wasn't sucked into SWTOR hype).
I feel the same.
they really need to tone down the particle effects though...

What have been your favourite mmos over the past 13 years EGT?
my favorites over the years, everquest, wow vanilla-bc. played most of them, even the betas... achieved upto and through endgame in most... these 2 are the only ones that stand out still in terms of difficulty/nostalgia/entertainment. moreso everquest.
I also pre-ordered this mother ****er. I'm also 90% sure that my 6 1/2 relationship is going to end. Much more time for me to put in some WORK on these games.
Unsubbed from SW:ToR yesterday. Really hoping that GW2 hasn't succumbed to MMO standard fetch quests and grinding. The lack of these awful elements is the main reason that GW1 is the only MMO I've ever enjoyed.
I really like how the quest structure works. The heart quests are similar to standard MMO grind quests but they feel much more dynamic. There are several different ways to complete a heart quest, e.g. kill x enemies, collect x tools, feed x cows which adds a little variety. What makes them fun though is the unexpected stuff that happens. A boss might spring up in the middle of the quest and suddenly I'm working with all the players in the area to bring the boss down.
The dynamic events work pretty well, i can just be wandering along when the map shows that there's an event going on nearby. It's cool that I can choose to jump in or ignore it. The game's got an informal approach to questing and grouping which gives a sense of freedom. And the level downscaling and flat levelling curves are great ideas - never again have to worry about out-levelling content.
One problem with the quests though is that I did find I was often under-levelled. I'd completed all the level-appropriate quests but still wasn't high enough level for the next heart or personal story quest. Heart quests that are one level above your character are doable because of all the other players involved; personal quests are instanced so I found them quite difficult to complete if not the right level. I pretty much had to grind by walking around killing random monsters to get my level up at times.
Biggest problem with the game right now imho is the melee combat. My thief died so quickly in melee that it just wasn't worth getting close considering I could do almost as much (perhaps even no less) damage at range at far less risk. Also, when a large group of players was involved in a fight, there were so many visual effects flying around that it was impossible to see what was going on, which led to several deaths in melee. The consensus view in the official forums seems to be that melee, regardless of what class you play, is too ineffective right now. So hopefully the devs will address the balance.
Really was hoping to see more beta experiences. This is probably one of the only gaming communities where the people involved are not 12 and incapable of giving any kind of non-bias report.
Really wanting to see the constructive/negative feedback too. not just the gushy stuff
I saw a few pvp videos and I must say, it looks like it's going to be fukn fun as hell. The WvWvW seems like it's going to be a lot like DAOC (I never played but hear about it every game I play) and organized groups are king. I just hope it doesn't let me down. I didn't play any WvWvW during the beta because my laptop is currently my temporary gaming computer and it was running a bit warm for my liking so I kind of just messed around a bit with pve and then quit.
There's a stress test tomorrow if you have bought the game. Only like 7 hours.
terrible time for the stress test, you think they would schedule it for a better time for those working 9-5's especially on a Monday.
Maybe it's intended more for those in Europe? Works out quite well for me in the UK, 7pm until 2am. Although as it is a stress test, I wonder how enjoyable playing it will actually be.
