Is it really? Legitimately asking because I played Horizon: Zero Dawn and would say that's the best ps4 game this year but would love to play a contender.

I think it is. I love Breath of the Wild and was pretty much obsessed with it and thought nothing could top it this year and then I played Nier and was blown away. I'm on my second playthrough now. The way it combines it's story and mechanics is really unique and they just nail every aspect of it. One min you're playing a third person action game then a shmup, then a 2D platformer and it all blends so effortlessly. Everything feels so refined and well designed, the combat especially is really satisfying. The story won't be for everyone but I think it's very well done. I see it influencing a lot of games in the future, the praise it's got from devs and breakdowns of its mechanics is already prevalent.

I played but haven't finished Horizon and think it's very good and definitely deserves high praise however even though I think the actual gameplay is good, I don't rate it as highly as others. Horizon is easily the best looking game on console this year though. Since Nier is still selling for close to full price I'm not sure I could recommend it to a Horizon fan since they're very different in gameplay. If you're open minded though then I'd say get on to it asap. It was rated very highly by the press so check out some video reviews if you're interested.

This video is a great breakdown of it and I still think he left a lot out.

Yes Demon Souls was definitely overlooked when it was first released but retroactively gained attention and respect thanks to the success of the Souls series and From Software in general sense.

In a world where Dark Souls is never made Demon Souls would def. be one of the hidden gem games.

If you go back and play it now (as i did for the first time a few months ago) it can feel rough in some places (especially if you've played the more polished Bloodborne and DS3 type games) but you have to appreciate it for the era it was released it.

Sorry to bump something old, but this game captivated me when I was young. It was titled, "I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream." The premise was adapted from a novel of the same name. An all powerful AI has taken over and wiped out all of humanity, save five subjects, who it torments for its amusement.

The game is a point and click adventure a la Maniac Mansion, but the premise was so twisted for its time, as the AI forces the characters to face their greatest fears and confront moral dilemmas at the same time, that I couldn't put it down.

Nit pick, wasn't adapted from a novel, was adapted from a short story. Short story is very very good

One from each console that I own:

NES
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project
Overlooked because it came out a few months after the SNES had been released and while Turtles 4 was in arcades and soon to come to SNES.

Nintendo 64
Jet Force Gemini
Not sure how overlooked this is since it is a Rare game, but had a quasi metroidvania feel to it if you were collecting everything.

Gamecube
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
Gamecube remaster of the Playstation classic. Graphics are greatly updated as well as adding in abilities that were added for MGS 2.

Wii
Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure
First non-Nintendo game that used the Wii-mote with a real purpose instead of just waggling, as well as a tough as nails puzzle/point and click game.

I rank this as the third best RPG I've ever played behind Kotor and Morrowind.

So fitting to be my 1337th post.

So ****ing good. It was really the sleeper hit of 2013.

Great pick! Love this game, wish they would port it so more people can play it.

I played that game at the age of 6 after I convinced my parents to buy it at a garage sale for $5. Way too hard, could barely beat it with the help of a game genie
