SSX Tricky may as well have been called SSX Garibaldi for me because I played that level for a stupid amount of hours perfecting my run. I can't even remember any of the other tracks in the game but I still remember every inch of Garibaldi.

Commandos is legendary.

A more recent title I was thinking of the other day, was Unreal Championship 2 for the original Xbox. It came out late in the system's lifespan and was a sequel to Unreal Championship which was a completely forgettable, stripped down UT clone. However, the sequel went for the innovative and tried to do a lot of different things that weren't necessarily "Unreal." I mean, you played it with a controller-- it was a different beast.

The lore was surprisingly fresh and the melee combat was sooooooooooo satisfying. You could mix up combat rules like physics and gravity so that you had everyone flying around the arena like gods. Unfortunately, Xbox live hadn't really developed at this point and you could only split the screen for two players locally (instead of four). Still, it was a great change of pace at Halo LAN parties. I recall the "freeze-fatality" combos fondly.

I have a bunch during the PS1 era, all of them RPGs. I wouldn't say overlooked but more like overshadowed because Squaresoft was dominating the marketing/cornering the JRPG market for PS1 at the time, but these were the ones I thought of.

Had a lot of fun with Tricky...got the newer SSX game free on GWG but I could never get into it the same way.

Yeah agree about the PS1 RPG thing. There was an explosion of JRPG's in the North American market for the first time in the PS1 era and it was so crowded a lot of good ones never really made a big splash that might have if it weren't such a crowded market.

Damn that trailer was crazy - that game was given away as a free offer a few months back, now I really want to play it.

ps (one): was syphon filter ever considered overlooked? i think part 1 went a bit under the radar as it dropped when metal gear solid was released and both games very kinda similar. but for me syphon filter was better than mgs. yeah i said it !

The original Megarace was also pretty great. Elite soundtrack as well (made by the same French guy who did the Dune [for PC] soundtrack)

Siphon Filter had that great tongue-in-cheek attitude, while Metal Gear always takes itself SO seriously.

I had all 3 Siphon Filters for PS1, def great games, they were decently popular for that era, the series just never made the jump to PS2 successfully.

I remember renting the first one that came out on PS2 and it was very lackluster and the series sorta faded from people caring about it.

You guys must have liked it so much you forgot it was spelled Syphon Filter

The best games in the series were on PSP.

Out of curiosity I looked it up and the studio that made Syphon Filter is making the pretty hyped Days Gone.

Pretty much the first thing they've done of any substance for home consoles since the Syphon Filter series.

Syphon Filter is 1 of my all time top 10 games. I loved that game.

Yeah I loved them too, which is why I own all three on the PS1. I haven't played them in at least 20 years though, played through them a lot when I first got them, haven't touched them since, should put them on the list to revisit at some point.

For whatever reason I remember the aiming in the games being really good. Remember getting really good at headshots as that was by far the easiest way to progress. Also remember good variety in levels and objectives, just great overall games.

The most memorable thing about the original for me was that it had really good running animations for the time. It felt really satisfying running and gunning. I never owned or finished it though. Syphon Filter was really overlooked though, there were 6 games in the series all published by Sony.

If you want a real hidden gem on the PS1 then check out Apocolypse starring Bruce Willis, it's actually really fun. It was developed by Neversoft and the engine was later used for the Tony Hawk and Spiderman games.
