Figured this might be an interesting idea for a thread, post games that despite being awesome never really hit it big for whatever reason. People often call these cult classics or hidden gems or what not. Post from any era, any platform or PC.

I could post like 20 but to not suck all the air out of the room I'll limit it to two.

First is Kickle Cubicle, an a puzzle/action game for the NES released in 1988.

Puzzle games were always sort of a niche really, but this is not only an very interesting and often challenging puzzle game, but also has a lot of cool action elements, with a wide variety of enemies and bosses to fight. Out of the hundreds of people I met who ever owned an NES, exactly one of them had this game, thankfully they were a friend of my in the neighborhood which is how I knew about it and why I got it.

If you still like playing old school NES games and you've never played this, either buy it or download it.

The second is also a genre-bending game. You could qualify it as an action/puzzle/racing game (as much sense as that makes), Blast Corps by Rare, released in 1997 for the N64.

The gameplay is extremely unique and difficult to describe. Essentially a runaway nuclear carrier is careening out of control and if it hits anything it blows up, so your job is to clear stuff out of it's path. There's tremendous variety in the levels, vehicles, and techniques you use to do this. Probably due to it's extremely unique nature and also being overshadowed by Rare's other N64 titles, it's usually one of the best N64 titles that people have never played.

Does The Guardian Legend count as overlooked? Man, I loved that game, but I never see it come up in nostalgia threads....

Not overlooked if you were a Mac user in the mid to late 90s, but the Marathon Trilogy and Myth: The Fallen Lords from Bungie are probably still in your top games and are pretty unknown outside of that gaming circle, curses be on Bungie's name for selling out their fanbase and moving entirely to console for Halo after being brought to that point entirely by their Mac followers. IDGAF now, but I was super pissed at them back in the day

You can download and play the Marathon trilogy on Windows now for free.

I always loved XIII and they set it up for a sequel it'll never get. It was like playing in a comic book with David Duchovney doing the VO for the main character.

Another one was Singularity. I don't even know anyone else who played that, but it was really fun.

Planscape: Torment. I guess ya considered a classic by most but it really didn't get the hype that other games did.

When Blast Corps was coming out, the AOL Nintendo channel (AOL had its own keyword sites as opposed to real web pages; similar idea to a web page but inside the AOL interface and generally more community-focused) ran a song parody contest for it. I won it - you just had to write it out, not perform it.

Second and third place did stupid kids stuff like a Gilligan's Island parody or Jingle Bells. I did Piano Man.

Monster Rancher: battle card for original playstation.

Super complex game, had some broken decks for sure and the PC opponents mostly sucked but it had a weird replayability factor to it.

Heh, I bought the PS1 Monster Rancher because it was rated a 5/5 by Next Generation magazine. I never got all that into it. Grinded it a bit but it never clicked.

You could put any random CD you had into the PS1 and it would generate a new monster for you based on the info on the CD.

Spoiler:

I consider this overlooked purely because of the fact that it was never continued as a series. Still miffed.

Hmm...I'd have to really think about this one. I think Singularity was a bit under rated if I remember right for the PS3. I'm sure I can come up with a better example.

One of my favorite action RPGs of all time. Good gameplay, pretty good story. Is still very playable today. Usually play through it every couple of years when I think of it. Thanks for the thread....gonna fire up the emulator now!

Crystalis is a good entry, I also had it and loved it. Easy to call it "Zelda-clone" but probably the best Zelda clone ever, with enough differences to make it it's own game. Very interesting and mature storyline for an NES game too, Final Fantasy'eque.

Crystalis was great but I have not played since the NES days, I will need to go back and revisit that one.

One of my personal favorites - Uncharted Waters: New Horizons

If you like RPG's this is a sailing/trading/exploring/fighting/pirates version that might be for you.

Microprose M:TG Shandalar same thing. Clunky in a lot of ways but man I played that game a lot. It was updated by someone in 2015 so it is playable on a PC now, I still go back and mess around with it now and then.
