Interstate '76 + expansion for $6. The graphics look pretty dated these days but I remember this game being pretty ill back in the day when it was new.

Everybody loved the soundtrack.

Might get Master of Magic and store it away for a rainy day. The reviews for that one were over the top positive back in the day, and so many people still remember it as being great.

Master of Magic is so good. Great combination of Civ and RPG elements. I don't know why they never made a sequel. That said, the original still holds up very well to this day.

Someone is making a sequel of sorts to it. I remember seeing some awesome screens and such. I think it's THQ. It looked ridic good.

Jagged Alliance 2 is supposedly great, but wow starting up is confusing. You don't get a ton of guidance, and it takes a long time just to get in the field and start playing. The hiring etc stuff is pretty cumbersome and intimidating when you're new. Still, I'll go back to it and try again someday. I'm too busy with X-Com right now to bother, though.

And along with it, the Disciples II gold pack (original game + 3 expansions) is 50% off, so possibly the best $5 you could ever spend.

Not possible by definition since X-COM: UFO Defense was within a hair of perfect.

I don't know...

To me, JA2 1.13 with HAM and Wildfire is pretty much perfect too.

Maybe the fact that I played XCOM a long time ago clouds my judgment, but I stand by my choice.

I'm sure I'll like it a lot when I get into it too. It's just that X-Com is so nearly perfect at what it does -- and it does a lot -- that it can't really have the living hell kicked out of it by another game. It's always possible that it could be matched or bettered. But it's good enough for that to not make it suck in comparison.

I bought JA and JA2. Am in a world of confusion in JA; some kind of tutorial explaining how you get off your feet and get started would help, but I'm kinda clueless as to wtf is going on so far.

So apparently there are some trees, and I can capture new territories to acquire access to them, but I can't put tappers on all the trees for some reason? How do I increase my dudes' action points? Is there a store or something where I can purchase more ammo/weapons or do I have to make do with what's lying around on the ground? What the hell am I supposed to do with this rock I picked up?

I never played JA1, so I can't help you there...

I would not bother with JA1, JA2 is just utter greatness.

In JA2 you have to capture the airport square to be able to ship in supplies, however you will loot the majority. You have to capture mining hexes (plus the attached town) to get income. Also once you capture a town you can train militia to guard the town. Watching the battles between the Ai forces and your militia (which gain experience and level up) is fun imo. If you have men present when the AI forces attack then you can participate in the battle.

You can throw rocks to distract the enemy, tough to pull off properly
though.

IMO JA2 in no more intimidating for the beginner than XCOM. A newbie starting XCOM for the first time will probably have more false dawns = restarts imo.

JA2 will have a huge fun ROI on any time spent learning its ropes.

Yeah I just got JA2 and the two expansions and skipped JA1. Got a team together and started the campaign and just shot my first villain.
Completely clueless though; I guess I'll read the manual pdf that came with the game

The first square you attack there will be an item you need on one of the bad guys to be able to get money from the trees. I recommend getting Ice, Ivan and speck to start with. Expand as quickly as you can. There is more than enough ammo about, get a crowbar to open crates and use the wait function 'w' when your guys are tired.

JA1 was a great game I loved it along with xcom. Haven't played JA2 but im quite tempted to get it.

Thanks for the tips. I actually didn't seem to need a crowbar to open crates? I got that item and I'm on day 2 or 3 right now having captured maybe 4 territories so far.

Also, through Monday you can get Beyond Good & Evil, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, and Psychonauts for 25% off ($7.50). I haven't played Psychonauts but afaik it's supposed to be good, and I played the other two on Xbox and they were extremely good, would recommend!

All 3 Gabriel Knights were available for $12.57 a couple of weeks ago, but I was a dick and didn't bother bumping the thread.
