I find that if I drive the FGT conservatively enough to get around without crashing I'm not fast enough to win and when I drive it fast enough to win I inevitably crash out of contention. What's the trick with this car? How fast should gear my transmission for this series?

yeah, without seasonal it's brutally hard to make any money, beyond belief how much they went the other way with this version of the game.
The FGT is much harder to drive than the F1 cars and the AI in that series is tougher than in any other. I can't remember a trick, it's kind of hard. you want to have a lot of room on the gears to give you that super top end speed those times when you're trying to catch up and you need the draft. The car has so much power that it really doesn't need 7 gears so give yourself somewhere around 300 on the top speed so you can actually go 260 - 270 when you have a long straight and a draft. you'll never miss it on the low end and in fact it should make it a little easier to keep from spinning the tires.
Also, on the f1 nurburgring course the AI wrecks at the same spot lap after lap so that's an easy victory.
I think on another race it was raining and they started with dry tires and all pitted so look to exploit that haywire stuff.
