Re: Which games would you list as the top 10 best (NOT favorite) games ever?
I have only played the first one, so I can't compare, but the dogs crashing through the window scene has got to rank up there in the list of greatest moments in video games.

Only watched part 1 so far but can't believe I never saw them. Part 1 is spot on and easily says anything I would have said on the topic.
Cliffs: JRPGs and Western RPGs are not the same genre.

Re: Which games would you list as the top 10 best (NOT favorite) games ever?
My favorite RE game was actually the remake of re1 (I think it was called origins or something stupid). The goat was hands down re2 though. RE4, while fun as hell and all, barely even qualifies as a resident evil game. I remember when I first played it, I was pretty upset about what they did to the game. But I ended up liking it enough to even replay it on the wii (best version by far).
And realistically, the pokemon games are not in the top anything unless we're talking about handheld releases only.

The remake for the Gamecube I found too hard and annoying. It took ammo conservation to a whole new level. It took about 50 bullets to down a zombie,.
Pokemon was great until you realised how exploitable the battle system is. The Gym battles were easy because they only used 1 type of pokemon. That way you ravage them in no time with a very simple strategy/.
the battles against your rival were much more challenging,

I had more than enough ammo, I'd say inventory management was the major annoyance. It isn't really an issue of ammo conservation, but one of choosing your fights. I think some people play RE with the goal to kill every zombie they see, that's really only the goal of RE4. A survival horror should only require you to kill what you must to move on, and avoid whatever else you can.

RE1 is a fine game, but gimping controls in order to make a game spooky or difficult isn't a good design choice. It gets a ton of points for time-of-release stuff, but it's not very playable. RE4 on the other hand is amazingly playable with great controls, but it's hardly scary (and it paved the way for RE5, and that's unforgivable).
Metal Gear Solid is similar. MSG was groundbreaking and great, but the controls were AIDS. Cut to MSG3, and you have an amazing possibly top 20 OAT game.

the gamecube remake of RE1 was a masterpiece
i find myself hard pressed to say anything bad about it. it had an amazing atmosphere. controls are obv very different to those most modern games and it is hard as hell in places but i don't think that detracts from anything.

What do you mean with gimping controls?
remember this was early 3D era, every game had wonkey controls and or camera issues, didn't mean nobody liked the games, it just means they age a little worse... The first game where I felt like the controls were really amazing was Ape Escape, probably an underrated title too because the control system was really cool and it basicly did everything SM64 did but better from gameplay POV. I think it would deserve a spot in the top 100. Collecting all monkeys is probably the most fun I ever had in post game content that wasn't a sandbox.

The controls in RE1 are damn near unplayable. Camera angels that don't allow you to see anything your character is seeing and possibly the worst control design for moving around ever.
Some people say that enhances the game's "scary factor" but those people are wrong.

Re: Which games would you list as the top 10 best (NOT favorite) games ever?
it's not damn near unplayable when I'm sure a million people have beaten the game. I think it's only something that stands out as having bad controls when you play it today, back then I really had no issues with it. People complain about resident evil control scheme because it took the series so long to evolve past that, not because it was released with intentionally bad controls or whatever ridiculous claim you made.

Re: Which games would you list as the top 10 best (NOT favorite) games ever?
I agree fixed angles were very irritating sometimes, especially in the bigger rooms with enemies since often you had to run from enemies and came into a spot where you could defend again but were at such an awkard angle that you had no idea wether you were shooting the zombie or a wall 10 feet next to it... but they certainly also had advantages. It DID add to the scary factor if you compare it to its generation. People did not expect free cameramovement yet, a ton of games had a form of uncontrolable or limited camera movement. Today it would be irritating if a game like that came out since we expect free camera movement. In fact I'm not even sure wether I found it irritating if it was pulled off well. Most people would just hate it . But if you look at games like FFVII-IX, I actually loved the static camera points. Granted it's an RPG with a turn based battling system so movement is not that important, but it worked really well in creating an atmosphere.
Note that in RE1 Capcom deliberately used it as a sort of mechanic. It was very often you were exploring an area and knew there was a zombie in it since it was mumbling, but had no way of seeing it yet. Imo that worked in making **** intense. Walking "into" a camera holding a knife because the zombie could pop up right in front of you any second was awesome.

Yeah we got RE1 when it came out and played it in a darkened room. The dogs scared the **** out of us and we were also wowed by the graphics at the time.
Was also great when we returned to the house with the frog thingies but had wasted pretty much all our amo because we didn't think we'de return to the house haha...required a restart fromt he beginning and saving more ammo
