I put CoD on there because I think a shooter needs to be on there and it's the latest franchise to revolutionize the genre. But really, I have no idea which shooter should be on there, but I think it should only be one title in the top 10.

if anyone should stop gaming, then its you. And if you dont want to embarrass yourself any further, then you should probably stop posting too.

why you mad tho?

used your 11th post in 5 years to reply to me, must be pretty irate brah.

fartfest, good one. did you spend an hour planning that post trying to think of the most original sounding word? Anyways GTA sucks. It's the epitome of unintelligent gaming along with the Call of Duty franchise and you need to stop crying about it.

To be honest, I dont really care if you think GTA sucks or if fable 2 should be in a top games list of all time.
I disagree with plenty of other games on other peoples lists before you. Its just the way you brought your point across that made me "bite", although I already regret that. I should have known better.

I wish you all the best

thread shows just how difficult a top 10 (much less top 100) best x ever list is to make.

Re: Which games would you list as the top 10 best (NOT favorite) games ever?

I'd love to participate but going with "10 best" is tough. "10 most influential" is a very different list than "10 games I'd most recommend today" so I feel like there's just no good way to go about it... plus I'm well aware of my personal bias. Games like GoldenEye or GTA might be deserving, but I just don't spend time on first person shooters and never played GTA more that a few minutes.

Sooooo let's give this a shot. I'll go with (in no particular order):

Ultima Online
Starcraft
Street Fighter (probably either SSF2 or SF4)
Doom or Quake
Grand Theft Auto (the series)
Super Mario Brothers or SMB3
Final Fantasy III or VII
Ms. Pac Man
Pong
Donkey Kong

All games chosen purely because those games don't get made, and I think the modern videogame landscape looks radically different. If a fundamentalist video game hater gets their hands on a time machine, these are the highest priority games to protect if you want to keep modern gaming looking like it does now.

Worth noting that I only actually sat down and enjoyed maybe 4-5 of these games , although I had a chance at all of them when they were fairly new and fresh (except Pong, which I barely missed out on, but it was still the first game I ever played on a home console).

I personally think a "Top 10 games you would take with you if you were stuck alone in a room for the rest of your life" is more interesting, because then you'd have to choose based purely on how many hours you could put into it.

If I could make that list, I'd go with (excluding MMOs because I feel like that's cheating):

Civilization IV (I actually prefer Civ 5 most of the time, but 4 is just deeper)

Diablo 2 (it pains me to even put this on here, but there's no denying it's time-sinkability)

Skyrim (just sooo much to do)

Ms. Pac Man (just for variety's sake and because I'd need at least one repetitive, get the high score style game)

Starcraft (as long as I have access to all the fan made content as well)

just for a start. Even that list makes me sad though, as it leaves out a lot of game I really, really enjoyed, like Silent Hill 2, Parasite Eve, Full Throttle, Phantasmagoria, Dark Seed, Speedball 2, The Chaos Engine, TMNT, X-Men or Simpsons Arcade, Super Metroid, and tons more because they were either 1) too short 2) lack replay value (Full Throttle and Darkseed are real treats the first time through imo, but once you've solved them, well, that's it) or 3) really need co-op to put them "over the top" and assume I'm stuck alone on the island.

Since it was mentioned in the OP, I'm 30 years old, although that's probably easily guessable by the games mentioned.

lol no. It's amazingly medicore; does nothing it hasn't already done before, it's just pretty and marketed to morons.

Like I said, CS for the fan base alone does better then COD, the accuracy needed for shots, the modifications and variables based on it (although, you'd probably argue half life deserves this.) and the use in competition play.

I agree that there is no objective way to determine the "best" games, it will always come down to subjective preference of a certain genre or attachment to a certain series.

Just by looking at my list again I realize that I rated TES 3 too high just because I love that game so much.

I have one question though: There are multiple mentions of Starcraft as one of the best and most influental game of all time. I am not that much of an RTS player and I probably didnt play it more than 20-30 hours, so my question is: what makes that game so great and influental compared to earlier games of the same genre like Dune, C&C, Warcraft, AOE...etc.?

i think starcraft gets so much love because it spans the levels of play really well from beginner to korean. its as deep as it needs to be at each level of play and always offers more.

also, more importantly, its one of the most balanced games ever (by the end of all the patching etc). if you have two people of equal skill level play each other, no race or map or anything else really pushes it in either direction. theres no one unit or building that will just auto win for you. very few other games where you are playing against another person have achieved this. there is always an unfair race or character or ship or car or something that is much better than everything else.

in general the game just brought levels of complexity to RTS that were otherwise unheard of, and really laid the framework for everything after it.

my list, no particular order:

castlevania: symphony of the night
starcraft
everquest 1 (pre-luclin)
super metroid
mario 3
soul calibur 2
zelda oot
tetris
final fantasy 7
mario kart 64

I chose Starcraft because it was the game that everyone played. It was the first RTS to really be a huge megahit, and spawned a thousand imitators. It's still played pretty frequently even today, over a decade after its release. There are other RTS games that I think are cooler, but Starcraft is like the platonic ideal of RTS.

I also spent three years in South Korea, where they had Starcraft 2 painted public buses, they sold the game in convenience stores, had entire TV channels that were basically like ESPN, but exclusively for Starcraft, and "PC Rooms" or "PC Bangs" - huge rooms full of computers where you can rent PCs by the hour - exist on literally every street corner, and the country has some of the fastest and cheapest internet in the world, all originally built to play Starcraft.

When meeting me for the first time, one of the top five questions a Korean child will ask is "Which race do you play in Starcraft?" Professional Starcraft players have their faces and stats on cards like baseball or basketball players.

When a game is still being played continuously over a decade later, is the game in the genre that practically even your grandma knows, and has made entire countries go from, "eh, who needs computers?" to "Well, have you seen Starcraft? We better get our **** together" and turn computers and tech into their primary selling point, I just don't see how any other RTS could take the spot.

Never Played Symphony of the Night, but I have played Dawn of Sorrow which could have easily have made my top list. Do you reckon Symphony of the Night is a lot better than Dawn of Sorrow?

I never played it but Symphony of the Night is considered the best in the series by a long shot.

if we are factoring in innovation and time of release, every list without Super Mario 64 is unfortunately ignorant
