Re: Which games would you list as the top 10 best (NOT favorite) games ever?
That's like the videogame equivalent of T-ball
But in videogames unlike sports, somehow T-ball is winning
When I was younger and a game was really hard, that motivated me to get really good. And I learned a great lesson every time, which is that no matter how impossible something may seem at first, with practice and repetition it will eventually seem easy
They don't even make games like that anymore. Because if the average gamer today goes and plays Quake 3 and shoots the 10% rail that every new player shoots in that game, they'll just give up immediately
Re: Which games would you list as the top 10 best (NOT favorite) games ever?
LOL consoles.
Although it's understandable that games cater more and more to scrubs, I can't understand how these games are played competitively.
Imagine NFL quarterbacks and all they had to do was to just hurl it into the general direction of the receiver to always hit him perfectly. That's pretty much the equivalent of the flick-shot described above.
I have never been a console fan, so I probably don't have the most objective view on them, but I think the gaming world could do without them. Or to put it better: They should stick to "their" genres. Basically platformers and what I called above "manga/anime JRPG trash".
I couldn't care less to be honest if the two "worlds" wouldn't collide so often, but consoles certainly aren't good for the quality of games that "used to be" PC titles. Just imagine for a second Oblivion and Skyrim developed for PC and only ported to console (like Morrowind was) and how much better these two games could have been.

(to lazy for top 10)
1) 1.6 -- nothing even comes close.
2) WoW -- best MMO ever made, even though it has depleted.
3) Pokemon -- originals. found my gameboy color last year when I was moving and played it for a while...I was amazed that I was still interested (maybe sentiment from childhood)
4) NHL '97
5) Resident Evil 1
6) Splinter Cell
7) Harvest Moon

NHL '97 is super LOL. Hard to put a sports game on any list to begin with.. but it's universally accepted that NHL '94 is one of the best hockey games ever.

95 was a huge improvement over 94. First time you could play an entire season.

They took a huge risk to do it, too. Developing that game was a massive undertaking, they were working with brand new technology, so many things could've gone wrong in ways they couldn't even imagine because nobody had done a truly massive triple-A MMO before, and that was all done with no guarantee that the market would even be willing to pay a monthly fee to play the game (which also hadn't really been done before)
So that's the game I always think of when this question comes up.

Ultima Online's only problem was that it was ahead of its time. Most of us were still rocking 28800 modems (or worse), which affected gameplay by making it sluggish.
The fact that it only makes two lists ITT saddens me greatly. From an entertainment value perspective, UO is easily one of the greatest games of all time. It just came to us before the internet infrastructure was ready for it. Such sadness.

I wish there was more of an audience for this:
I think in a few generations, some game similar to this will be an olympic event. There's no other game where I watch the best compete and I'm just amazed that the human mind is even capable of what they're doing (other than maybe Starcraft: Brood War)

Funny how a search for posts by chuckleslovakian ITT returns exactly one result. How about you stop with the fingerpointing and instead just show us your list, which obviously will only consist of games you've never played, since games and genres (and the systems on which) you've played (them) will probably also be your favorite ones. And (as you have so correctly enlightened us with your post) favorite games should not be mentioned.
So here we go: chuckleslovakian's list of the ten best games in the history of video games, that he has never played:

Actually like this a lot. I think I replace Legend of Zelda with Super Mario 64 though.
My FAVORITE games list would probably include stuff like Final Fantasy 6, Rock Band 2, Counterstrike, Diablo 2, Blast Corps and so on. There is a big difference between these 2 lists.
Top 10 games I have never played, also an interesting challenge. Lets go with Majoras Mask, Starcraft 2, Diablo, Dune 2, Minecraft, Star Control 2, Tecmo Super Bowl, Maniac Mansion, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Baseball Stars. Hard list to come up with
