Re: G4's top 100 games of all time

Yeah, that's actually a somewhat solid list for once. A Command & Conquer game is the most notable omission i've found so far.
I'd also have Half Life 2 ahead of 1 but i dont know the impact the latter had (played it only recently).
Same thing with Civ 4 and 2.

Skyrim has no place on a top 100 cause its just nice visuals and a big world. Look closer and the world is so empty and the quests are all the same.

Dark souls on the other hand is a game that should have broken top 50. But i guess its to hard and the reviewers to the masses couldnt get through it so they gave the nod to Skyrim since its so big and shiny and has dragons they can actually manage to kill.

3. BioShock
10. World of Warcraft
20. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
31. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim
33. Final Fantasy VII
45. Metal Gear Solid
51. Ratchet & Clank Going Commando
57. Pokemon Red/Blue
84. Wii Sports
89. Left 4 Dead

3 games are lol-worthy because they deserve to be ranked better, hope you can spot them .
Obv any list needs explicit criteria. I always assume we're judging based on 3 things:
1) Game quality at release
2) Game Quality now
3) Impact of release

With those in mind, of the choices listed, FF7 and MGS need to be ranked higher and Bioshock is completely lol there.

Yeah MMOs, even Single player MMOs (you all know what I'm talking about) really don't belong on these lists. They aren't games so much as they are giant checklists. There's no emotional attachment or involvement in a narrative, just getting the next piece of armor. Grind, grind, grind...

And who can judge that better than us consumers? I mean it might be weird to put games like Skyrim (what you said about the empty world is true imo) or MW3 on the list but if they keep breaking sales records the must be doing at least something right. Who should decide Dark Souls is a better game than Skyrim which probably crushed DS in terms of number of sales?

Such a low rating on Metal Gear Solid and FF7? Only complaints here. I was extremely impressed with Bioshock when I first played it and it's a game on my personal top 10. Why all the hate?

I'm all for having a "Sales=Greatness" category, but at least admit that it's a horrible metric.

Christ, the movie Transformers: Dark of the Moon did 1.1 billion worldwide. The masses are morons and appealing to them is both easy and not indicative of quality.

Apparently because it's not System Shock 2! The fashionable kids who post here seem to prefer System Shock 2 to Bioshock.

I played System Shock 2 a couple of weeks ago didn't complete it, but I wish I had played it at the time of its release. The graphics are almost like N64 graphics and the character animations are almost embarrassingly bad compared to today. But I suspect it would have been a great game at the time.

It's far from optimal ofcourse, but having it any other way makes the list largely objective. That's not a problem at all, but some of the comments just gave me the idea that some people think a game is better than another as a fact, while the sales would very much disagree.

i would never consult sales statistics while making a top 100 list for anything

Re: G4's top 100 games of all time

Any list has got to give weight to pioneering games, even if by modern standards they are weak. Obviously sales of a game in the 80's is nothing compared to day.

Also think the original versions generally should rank higher than sequels.
