re: Europa Universalis 3 - New and Improved! (with ongoing MP game and AARs)

History of Milan, 1399-1428

Reign of King Gian Galeazzo I Visconti.

The reign of King Gian was one constantly defined by war and the King's unfortunate alcoholism. As the year 1400 commenced King Gian was in the middle of a massive bender when word reached him of the Papal State's unprovoked attack on the neighboring province of Urbino. King Gian immediately pronounced "**** the Pope, I'm going to steal his hat", and Milan immediately went to war on the side of Urbino. Milan's military was far more superior than the Pope's, so victory was assured.

That was until Naples decided to declare war on Urbino as well. This would not usually have been a problem, but Naples was allied to many other Italian states and, more significantly, Bohemia who was the current Holy Roman Emperor. Milan was not really obligated to defend Urbino (this being a separate war) King Gian nevertheless overruled the wise counsel of his advisors to stay out of it (being still drunk), shouted "Cave to ****ing Nipples? NO, We shall steal their wine! MOAR WINE!" and Milan promptly joined in the war to defend Urbino from Naples, and half of Italy, and the Holy Roman Emperor.

This, predictably, went badly. The papal states were crushed and annexed, with the provinces of Rome and Romanga falling under Milanese control (rumors that the former Pope's Hat became King Gian's chamber pot are totally unfounded), but the war with Naples went poorly. An attempt was made to occupy Naples' capital and thus end the war quickly but reinforcing Bohemian armies were able to relieve the defenders and drive off the Milanese Army. With half of northern Italy occupied and the army completely on the run the Milanese court (the fact that Gian was currently passed out is probably the only reason Milan survived the war) took the first peace deal offered by Bohemia which involved the release of the provinces of Parma and Siena as separate states in addition to gold.

With Bohemia out of the war, and the entrance of Switzerland on the side of Milan, the tide swiftly changed. Enemy armies were pushed back across the border and peace was eventually secured, restoring the borders to their previous states (minus the territory given up in the Bohemian deal).

In subsequent years more smaller wars were initiated by Milan and other Italian states. Among them were The Conquest of Firenze, where Tuscany was annexed. The Subjugations of Mantua, Ferrera, and Modena where the three states were vassalized by Milan. The reconquest of Parma in which the rightful province of Parma was re-incorporated into Milan. And Finally the Conquest of Urbino, who despite owing their entire existence to Milan in the first place continually feremented rebellion in Milanese territory until Gian exploded in rage and directed his generals to "butt**** them up their collective arses".

The 1st and 2nd Milanese Interventions involved Milan's armies marching against France (in support of a beleaguered Castille) and Bavaria, Venice, Hungary, and Bavaria (in defense of Austria). The Milanese armies were victorious in all these wars, and revenge was had on Naples when they were crushed and completely annexed in 1417. King Gian continued his drunken glorious reign until 1426 when his liver finally gave out and he died. As his son had died in an unfortunate drunk riding incident years before the Visconti dynasty ended in Milan and the noble Galeazzo Maria I Massimo rose to the throne.

By 1428 Milan was the unchallenged master of Italy. From the island of Sicily to the Alps all of Italy, save the lone free province of Siena and the merchant leagues of Genoa and Venice, is under Milanese hegemony. However, while her military is strong she is still economically weak in comparison with other European powers, a problem that the new ruler has vowed to correct.

re: Europa Universalis 3 - New and Improved! (with ongoing MP game and AARs)

Very fun today. Sorry for my sync issues at the start, I won't be on wireless again.

My basic plan for England during the starting years was to gradually retreat from France and make Great Britain. The few provinces England starts with in France are not really worth the struggle of many wars where the superior manpower of France would likely mean their eventual win. These wars would also have distracted England from the easy targets of Scotland and Ireland.

History of England, 1399-1428

King Henry IV was an uninspiring leader with terrible skills at everything. His people therefore promptly advised to become a general and it was hoped that he would die valiantly on the field of battle, where he unfortunately refused to die and still reigns today.

On the very first day France immediately declared war. The king rode off and captured their capital but failed to make peace before the tide turned against England. England's possessions in southern France were ceded. A decade later another war with France left Calais in French hands, with no English presence on the continent. So much for the slow withdrawal. At least France will leave England alone now.

It was many years until a half-way useful mission came - to vassalise Scotland. Despite a Scottish Braveheart 15,000 men army magically appearing, nothing could stop the English forces from occupying Scotland, resulting in Scotand's vassalisation and the province of Aberdeen ceded. The Irish were also quickly subdued and became part of England a few years later.

With the British Isles firmly under English rule, Henry IV began to get bored. Despite him being useless a useless monarch, he was a loyal ally. With England's unmatched naval power they were free to roam the world, helping out allies around Europe. When Sweden requested help against the Teutonic Order, England came and conquered, receiving a landlocked useless province in reward. When Venice caused trouble in the south, the navy set sail again, occupied Venice and received another random province as reward.

With France making large inroads into Castille and potentially becoming dangerously strong, Henry IV declared war on France to provide a distraction for the Castillian forces and to split the French forces. The invasion of France began successfully with the entire north coast of France besieged with minimal resistance from the French. This was a large enough distraction for the French to offer a while peace to Castille and then come racing up the length of France with their monster armies to eat the English. A quick tactical withdraw and a white peace were signed.

Currently Sweden has once again requested help, but this time to stop Denmark and Norway. England has occupied Iceland and a province in Norway, but Denmark refuses to make peace. The provinces in Iceland would be a very useful stepping stone to the new world in the hands of the English. It is a race against time to occupy more provinces and demand a separate peace for the provinces in Iceland, before Sweden crumbles and declares peace for all in the alliance.

No pvp wars yet but AI france did great for you, got almost all of burgundy including antwerp.

On another note, AI Poland did really well too and we could use a player in Poland in case anyone else wants to join next week (maybe the guy who was supposed to be portugal?). Poland still has the union with Lithuania and conquered like 10 provinces

Kingdom of Portugal, 1399-1428

King Joao I de Avis: January 1 1385 - October 10 1410

The wise King Joao of Portugal knew all too well that his country was small and far removed from most of Europe. He decided to promote foreign trade, hoping that some day Portugese merchants would find success trading abroad, instead of lazily trading only in Lisbon, especially since the other nations of Europe would not be annoyed nearly as much by Portugese merchants as they would be by Portugese armies. To secure his border, he signed an alliance with the Kingdom of Castille, his only - and much larger - neighbour. He also saw to the improvement of the home land, ordering the Expansion of the Beaurocracy in 1404, and later building a series of Constables to oversee taxation in the provinces.

Portugal's old allies, the English, were attacked by France in October of 1399. Remembering that his army was little more than a small group of palace guards, Joao went to the task of raising a larger standing army. But by the time the Portugese troops were ready, it was too late - the battles had already been fought, and England's armies were defeated.

However, Portugal's new Castillian allies requested aid in their Reconquista against the Moors of Granada and Morocco. Castille's armies had soundly defeated Granada, but a small Moroccan force landed and laid siege to Sevilla. Joao ordered Portugal's new armies off to help her allies, and the Moors were easily dispatched, first beaten in Andalusia and then chased and routed in Algarve. The ease with which they were defeated led some Portugese nobles to demand a crusade against the Moroccans, targeting Tangiers. Joao would later undertake just that mission. Sadly, the Moors proved more able to fight at home and managed to kill the brave King Joao as he led his armies into battle in Morocco. His son would see to it that the Moroccan's paid dearly.

Before his invasion of Morocco proper, King Joao also assisted the Kingdom of Castille in the war agaisnt Aragon. Aragon's armies had been sent north to intercede in some small wars in Germany, and the few defenders were easily overwhelmed. Joao demanded a tribute of gold in exchange for peace, with there Aragonese eagerly accepted. Castille, however, took most of Aragon's Iberian possessions. Such recklessly hostile action earned Castille a horrible reputation and brought on excommunication by the Pope. France took the opportunity to attack Castille, and Joao was forced to end his alliance with Castille in order to honour his existing truce with France. It also served well to distance Portugal from the Tyrant of Toledo.

King Duarte de Avis: 21 October 1410 - 11 October 1425

King Joao's son, Prince Duarte, took up the crusade in his father's name, leading the 3rd and final Portugese army into Morocco, to save the forces being counterattacked at Tangiers. His timely arrival ensured victory, and with their armies destroyed Morocco was quickly defeated. Their 3 wealthiest and most northern provinces were taken in the peace, along with a sum of gold. He returned to Lisbon as a conqueror and was crowned King amidst great celebrations.

Having seen the Moors' cavalry tactics first hand, King Duarte ordered Portugal's antiquated European-style Knights disbanded and replaced with new cavalry trained in the Moroccan Charge style. As soon as the old truce wore out, a Second Crusade against Morocco was declared. This time Morocco's forces were easily defeated by the upgraded Portugese armies. Morocco's allies in Tunisia were also easily beaten. Both Muslim countries were vassalized, pledging eternal loyalty to the Crown of Portugal. Honouring their new titles, Portugal came to Tunisia's defense against Algeria, who had attacked at the same time but been slower to conquer. The Algerians were beaten, with Atlas province returned to Morocco and Meilla added to Portugal's growing north African colonies.

The last few years of Duarte's rule were peaceful. Though he plotted to vassalize Algiers as well, he passed away suddenly before the truce lapsed. His son, only 14, was aided by a brief regency council before taking the throne for himself.

King Joao II: 28 September, 1426

Like his father, Joao immediately went to Morocco to take lead of Portugal's armies. When his father's peace treaty with Algiers expired, he attacked, along with his Moorish vassals. The war is ongoing, but Algiers' armies have been defeated in every battle and are constantly retreating.

Printing manies.

I never really bothered worrying about inflation before it got over 8% or so. I'm guessing I should be worried. Any master of the mint advisors I hire would only be about 2stars, so not that crazy good.

When at peace I could change my trade national idea into the master of the mint one to help it out I guess.

History of the Glorious Sultanate of the Ottomans 1399-1428

Padishah "Thunderbolt" Bayezid I

Bayezid's reign was marked by near constant war and expansion of Ottoman borders. Bayezid first decided that the mere existence of the countries of Karamon and Candor was insulting and decided to annex both of them. As he was preparing for two different wars in order to annex both countries as quickly as possible suddenly Karamon allied with Candor. Two wars were now outside the realm of possibility. Bayezid was heard to remark "What the **** is this ****!"

The Ottoman's faithful vassals Bosnia and Serbia answered the call to war and quickly destroyed the armies of Karamon and Candor and occupied their provinces. Bayezid, still wanted his 2nd war, declared war on the tiny country of Ramazan. Candor and Ramazan were quickly annexed, while Karamon was left with the following note:

See you in 5 years
-Thunderbolt B
Bayezid found himself at peace. He also found he didn't like being at peace. War was quickly declared on Wallachia with the intent of vassalization. Byzantium didn't think this sounded like a very good idea and declared war on the Ottomans. With their army destroyed and their provinces occupied Byzantium decided that war with the Ottomans was an even worse idea and peace was declared. Wallachia became the latest Ottoman vassal and another military ally.

Still not thinking highly of peace Bayezid declared war on Mus and quickly annexed the one province country. Next up was a return visit to Karamon, with much better results.

Then a stroke of luck. Apparently in one of Europe's countless irrelevant wars the country of Epirus was liberated from Naples by Milan. War was declared and Epirus joined the growing Ottomans. Milan wisely declared a white peace.

At peace once again and with no other small neighbors begging for inclusion Bayezid turned his attention to the Mamluks. Fighting to a stalemate Bayezid was happy with the conquest of Aleppo, Hammah, Beirut, and Damascus. After peace was declared the Mamluks quickly descended into a wretched hive of scum and villiany as they were racked with rebellion after rebellion.

With the prospect of several years of peace ahead Bayezid decided he would rather die instead. So he did. Bayezid's reign was successful and he oversaw the annexation of 14 provinces and the addition of 1 new vassal. During his reign he also did his best to enlighten the Christian infidels in the Sultanate; converting Nis, Macedonia, Edirne, Bulgaria, Burgus, and Janina to the one true faith.

Regency Council - March 31, 1421

On March 31st a Regency Council took control of the Ottoman lands. They had many sweeping changes to enact and got started b-

Padishah "Punisher" Mustafa I - April 3, 1421

Mustafa I was proclamied Padishah of the Ottomans April 3rd, 1421 and quickly set to work continuing his fathers legacy.

Meanwhile in Mamlukland the province of Sidon quickly declared it's independence. Seeing an opportunity Mustafa declared war. Despite still having a 4 year truce left, the Mamluks came to Sidon's aid and it was on like Donkey Kong (who I believe was some minor Mamlukian noble). Sidon was annexed and the entire Mamluk country was laid to waste by the unstoppable Ottoman armies. The Mamluks were let off with a warning.

After punishing the Mamluks for their insolence Mustafa declared Jihad against the heathen Trebizond. Byzantium again tried to interfere and were again told to **** off. The Trebizond punishment for being Christian was annexation.

Satisfied by his martial pimpslaps, Mustafa decided the Ottoman Sultanate wasn't grand enough and declared the land an empire. The Ottoman Empire was born and Mustafa declared himself Padishah Emperor of Dune the Ottomans.
